Reloading 20 Practical

I have a set of Redding Bushing dies for 223 AI and the proper bushings to neck down to 20 caliber. Can I use these dies to do 20 Practical or should I just have the barrel done to a 20/223 AI or just buy the 223 bushing die and call it a day....

Very Respectfully

I highly recommend the 20-223 AI, I own a rifle chambered in it and have been very impressed with the accuracy/performance level. I would recommend it over the standard 20 practical for brass life including less trimming, especially since you already have the dies needed.

David Kiff at PTG will fix you up. Love my .20-.223AI and my recommendation is to give yourself enough barrel length to get the job done. FYI-I run a 28" 8.5tw with the 39-55 grain-ers.

I don't currently know any gunsmith's with the reamer although i am sure you will find one if you check around, if you do decide to buy your own i would recommend JGS or Manson. As far as twist rate of the barrel that would depend greatly on what bullet you plan to shoot. I personally have an 11 twist on my rifle and it works great for everything from 32 grain up to 45 grain. Personally i don't think the 223 case is the best option for shooting the heavies if that is your intended purpose, for 50-55 grain bullets i would move up to 20 BR, 5/35 SMC, or 20x47.

Ill do a single feed and probably rent a reamer from one of the rental companies. I have a gentleman that said he would do a barrel for me if I rented a reamer for him to do my barrel or is it better to just buy it.

renting a reamer is fine as long as the specs match what you need. If not i would buy one and get exactly what you want.

This^^^^^^

No sense in building it from scratch WRONG......... :o

If the reamer necessary isn`t available then i`d buy one that suits your needs.......

If you don't want to buy a reamer check out 4G reamer rentals my smith has used them says they are sharp and good, not sure if they have a AI reamer though might be worth a look.

Why not just go with the 20 Tactical? Standard reamer available, dies readily available, and it's basically a 20-223 AI. Oh, and the new berger manual has a bunch of load data on it!

For high volume varminting stick with the 20 Practical. Forming then fireforming 1000's of cases is for the birds, milsurp = cheap decent brass, any velocity gain = less barrel life, critters can't tell the difference between 3700 FPS and 3900.
