I think you'll lose some bc in a 9 twist but I've heard they stabilize in a 9. Not personal experience tho just hear say, Sorry. I'm in the same place as you are. Just bought 2 lbs of RL26 and ready to run some 162s on it. Also a 284 win with a 9 twist.I picked up some RL26 and would like to try it with the 162 and 180 ELDs in my 284. Does anyone have any good load data on either bullet?? Also will the 1-9 twist work for the 180 ELDs??? Thanks guys!!!!
My smith thought that I might be a little light on twist and that is the reason they were opening up as they slowed down at longer ranges..
No I do not. Once our weather straightens up, I'll head out.284winner, I have shot the 180 ELDs with 54grs of H4831SC and they shot really well!! I was getting around 2" groups for five at 500yds but when I shot out to 800yds they seemed to open up to near MOA where the 162s shot much tighter. My smith thought that I might be a little light on twist and that is the reason they were opening up as they slowed down at longer ranges.. I tried a load at 55 and 56grs with the 4831r @ a hundred the other night and the 56gr load opened up to about MOA but the 55gr load went into a .270 for five shots. I am going to try the RL26 with them in hopes of getting enough speed to get them out past a thousand. However more speed may not be the answer either or they may not like to shoot at the higher velocity. Do you have any idea on where your going to start with RL26 for the 162s????
Sounds good I have the same problem here. Late snow storms!! Please keep me posted on your results if you would....No I do not. Once our weather straightens up, I'll head out.
Norm, I read your post and I am confused by it.... I take it you mean 4831SC and that the RL16 shot better than the RL17, am I correct on this??? I am really trying to find out a good starting load for RL26 right now....Thanks for the reply!I started with 3841sc in my straight 284 WIN then changed to RL-17 and found less pressure and great Mv.
After a while I got a lb of RL-16 and it shot better than RL-16 and had better temp qualities.
Both Rl-17 and 16 use about the same weight load.
I started with A-MAX 162 gr then was forced to go to 162gr ELD-m which shot a bit better. Then characterized my barrel for 180 gr ELD-M and the gun now shoots as good as my 6BRX!
Will do. RL17 does really well in my 284s. Fast AND accurate.Sounds good I have the same problem here. Late snow storms!! Please keep me posted on your results if you would....
