Reloader 22

Good Afternoon!
I have an opportunity to pick up some Reloader 22 at a good price. I have used other powders from Alliant but never RE22. I do have a 7mag and 300 win mag but I have been using primarily IMR 4831. I see that RE22 is slower. Has anyone used it enough to recommend it over or in addition to 4831?

Thanks!
Mark

I have tried it in the 300wm and 280ai, and found it was not a productive in velocity/es/sd and accurcy ad 4831

I shoot RL 22 in a 6.5x284 and the accuracy and chrono numbers are quite good. It gives a bit better velocity than H4350 or H4831 in my rifle.

My experience with RL powders (RL15) in smaller cartridges has been that it is a dirty powder and leaves a lot of fouling. Am not sure that this is the case with RL22. Have not shot enough of it to make a judgement yet.

Mark,

My 7mag loves it so much I have 10+ lbs sitting aside just for that rifle... Imho, dont think there is a better powder for that cartridge..

Go get it buddy and you wont regret it.

What he said!
Double ditto to what they said.
My .300WM loves it, 70 RL-22, 210 Bergers, CCI 250's, and Norma Brass, 5" three shot groups at 1000 yards quite regularly. My 6.5*284 loves it also, 51.5 grains with 107 SMK's
Wayne.

+1 For reloader 22 being a dirty powder. That said it has produced some of my most accurate loads in my 300 WSM.
Very consistent speeds, little crunchy in the powder measure, but not too bad. I always have some on hand...

RL22 is the best powder in my 6.5x57AI with 142 SMK for accuracy and velocity.

Been my experience if you use too slow an RL powder for a given cartridge you get a lot of carbon. RL25 in my 6.5AI is like using charcoal. Went one burning rate up to RL22 and the carbon is "normal".

Another factor to consider with the RL series of powders is their double base chemistry (high nitroglycerine). There are those who contend that this gives unstable burning rates in high Summer temperatures. These shooters prefer H1000 or H4831sc. Never noticed this problem myself and I am shooting on Army ranges in the Summer with no shade and +30C (+90F) temperatures. I have seen Hodgdon powder users having just as much problem with the wind at 1000 yds as my RL loads.

Whether it is 'dirty' or not, it works great in my 7mm Rem. Mag. (66gr. for 3150 fps w/ Barnes 150 TSX), 30-06 (60 gr. for 2800 fps w/ 180 gr. Nosler Partition or 168 gr. TSX), 325 WSM (72 gr. for 3090 fps w/ 189 gr. Barnes TRSX). I never had a problem maintaining accuracy with 40 - 50 rounds down the tube. Probably would go more but never let a hunting rifle go any longer without cleaning.

Its my go to powder for both my 7MM Mag and .300 Win Mag, it is dirty as mentioned and i had a carbon fouling issue with it in my 6AI last year. I have found out it has to be run near max case capacities to keep carbon fouling down on match rifles but then sometimes it will take you out of that particular rifles node. But for hunting rifles it is tough to find a better powder.

Re 22 is a good choice, but it is more temp sensitive than H 1000. If velocity is your main concern, Re 22 will give about 100 fps more than H 1000.

My Win. Model 70 in 300 WSM with Barnes 180 gr TSX bullet gets 3,025 fps and outstanding accuracy for a thin barreled hunting rifle, about 1" to 1.25" for 5 shot groups. I haven't noticed it being hard to clean but I seldom put more than 20 rounds down the barrel before cleaning.

FWIW, When I said that R22 is a comparatively dirty powder, let me be more specific, lest my comment be interpreted as putting down an otherwise great powder.

The barrel starts to fowl out at around 60- 75 rounds which is about the same as most powders I've used so far. By the time it fowls out, the bore just looks dirtier than other powders. Cases come out of the action with a considerably darker carbon ring, and take a bit longer to clean in the tumbler.

I have to scrub the bore a bit more than I normally would, and have started buying higher quality copper brushes as well.

@Janson , if you hover your cursor over the poster's avatar on the name, a little box will pop up.

This OP is very infrequent but at least he did look at the forum last on April 30, 2024. You may or may not get timely response from very old threads and infrequent members, but you can certainly try.

On the other hand, the poster that you replied to hasn't been seen since 2015, so you are talking to a wall when you open a 10 yo thread and converse with folks who have not been seen in many years.

Another concept is to just start your own thread if you want to.
