Redding Type S FL Sizing Die

I am a relative novice to rifle reloading and am having a beginners problem. I have purchased a Redding Type S FL sizing die and did this because I can control the neck diameter with the different sized bushings. I have recieved my die but not the bushings as yet. However there appears to be a bushing installed already! I have read the instructions that came with this die (it is new from Brownells) and it states " can use same bushings that the neck die uses" The question is " How do I get the existing bushing out?" I have examined inside with a light and it looks like a very tight fit. Which way do I knock it out (toward the top end or the bottom end?) Have tried with a small dowel and it did not move. I do not want to ruin it.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

That's not a bushing, it's just the part of the die body on which the bushing will rest. The actual bushings will drop in and out with gravity.

edit: Just to be sure, I measured the depth of my .223 die as 1.325" from the top of the die body to that "bushing shelf" - should be close to the same on yours, I would think. The bushings themselves are about .375" thick.

At first I believed it was the floor for the bushing fit but decided to place a sized piece of brasss into it..... I used a hornady prepared brass for the OAL guage and found when looking through the top of the die with the shell completely into the die the top of it was flush and fit with this supposed bushing. This is why I assumed it was a bushing. tapping with a wooden dowel would not move it. Maybe what I got in the box was not a type S.... even though it was NIB?

Sometimes the bushings can be sticky. As chuckhunter mentioned, have you tried to run a nylon brush up through the bottom to the top? That should bring any bushing with it.

If you're wondering if that is just a plain FL die, the type S FL dies I have all have a "B/FL" in their roll mark on the outside of the die body. eg- 308 Winchester B/FL.

I had a brand new type S die 2 years ago that was apparently machined improperly. With a bushing installed, it would not resize the neck in any way. After inserting a case and removing the bushing, it was as you describe when looking from the top. It could not possibly size the neck because the recess for the bushing wasn't machined deep enough.

After a few incredulous minutes explaining and showing it to the guy who owns the reloading store I frequent, it was cheerfully replaced. It happens.

I want to thank you all for your help in this situation. The stamp on the die is "B/FL" this along with the directions and the box would indicate it is a Type "S". I tried a stiff plastic brush and could not remove it. I believe "nosualc" may have the problem solved. I think this die has been improperly machined. And there is no room for the bushing (machined improperly) as if I put a bushing into this die there is no way the case neck could be sized by it.

I will contact Redding about this situation.

Thanks again,

Bob G.
