Redding seater vs. RCBS GM seater??

I currently have the Redding competition Micrometer adjustable die for my .308, while I get almost zero runout which is great its seating depths are less than predictable. the adjustments on the micrometer do NOT equal the .001 adjustments they are supposed to. I have the ring set to equal my max OAL and theoretically should be able to dial the micrometer from there and get predictable seating depths. but I can't. I'll admit I'm not using a wrench to tighten down to the press. just max hand strength each time but anyway...

I was looking at the RCBS Gold Medal micrometer seater die with the window cut out. Anyone have any experience with these vs the Redding? Is it a better die?

Before you consider switching to another another Seater, call Redding and speak to one of their Technical Reps.

There's a good chance they'll resolve your issues.

There is probably a good reason why you chose Redding in the first place.

Don't jump ship just yet.

I will give them a call. I just noticed that it happens most often when I'm seating new vs used brass. even though the used brass has been sized back to the same dimensions as the new I guess the ductility of the metal is likely different though. that means the bite on the bullet must differ and this must put more or less resistance on the spring inside the micrometer, requiring adjustment of the dial...... does all that make sense or at least partially explain what's happening?.....

Just to give us a better understanding of the problem, take say 5 projectiles each seated without changing the seater die micrometer setting - would these 5 projectiles have varying seating depths ? Or, is the problem simply that the micrometer hash marks do not correlate exactly to 0.001 ?
