Redding Micrometer Seating Stem with Lyman die

Both Lyman and Redding seating plugs/stems are threaded 1/2x20 and look similar in form too. I have a Lyman .223 Seating die and would like to get a Redding Micrometer VLD seating top to use with it.

Has anyone here combined the two and if so how do they fit / work?

I know the micrometer top is not the same as the competition seating die with the sliding sleeve - I just need a VLD stem and the micrometer setting would be handsy too.

Sorry.

I don't have a clue and apparently nobody else has answered. I would suggest you call both Lyman and Redding. I know that Redding will listen to you and advise and tell you straight. I have no experience with Lyman Tech people.

I have tried that option once and will not ever do it again.
One point I would make is that the Redding seating top is not the same as the Redding Micrometer seating die at all. It is not as precise with regards to seating depth and nor with bullet run-out. If you want precise seating, buy the Redding Micrometer Seating die complete.

Thanks for the feedback - I am aware of the difference in the actual dies - I have Forster dies with the sliding sleeve too - but I am just wanting to know if the seating plug will actually fit and work within the limitations of these die designs? IE screw in and be able to use the adjust dial and thus the seating depth within a useable range - I am looking at the long end of .223 2.550+?

I’m surprised they are the same thread . It is my understanding they were not or at least not the sizing dies of Reading are not . I bought the lyman carbide expander thingamajig and it does not thread into my Redding sizing dies .

What originally piqued my interest is that the Redding seating plug said fits all dies threaded 1/2x20 and I thought that was the same as the Lyman which I have, I measured it and indeed it comes out to 1/2x20 hence my curiosity. My worry is that they may be different depths thus effecting the overall variation in seating range available.

As for the carbide sizing dies - I have just had a look at mine and they are definitely a different thread size and pitch to the seater - larger in diameter and a bit coarser by the look of them although I have not measured them.

Interesting I just assumed their threads were all the same . I’m a little embarrassed I’ve been doing this a long time and I’ve never actually looked to see if even my die sets all have the same threads When comparing same manufacturer throughout all die types.

I’ll add that are use that Reading micrometer aftermarket seater stem . However mine is the standard variety and when I had Vld type bullets to seat the tip of the bullet would bottom out in the seater stem . What I did was drilled out the stem a bit to allow for the tip of the bullet to travel deeper into the stem . Seem to work out just fine
