Redding Dies

What is the deal with the redding type s FL size dies with different neck bushings. Does this eliminate the use of a separate neck die and FL die? Do I really need both or will my standard RCBS FL die do the job if the brass gets difficult to function in the gun?

I could be wrong but my understanding is that the neck die only sizes the neck. The full die sizes the neck and body. The full bushing die alows you to adjust how much you size the neck while you are sizing the body. full length dies size to a set amount. The bushings let you set your own neck tention. Hope this helps, I am sure someone more nowledgable than me could explain this better.

wvuredneck09: FL type S neck bushing dies, made by Redding, Forster, etc. give you the choice of controlling the diameter of the sized neck, while still full-length sizing the case body, or by adjusting the die in the press, to not size the case body, but reduce neck diameter only. In other words, unlike standard "one piece" FL sizing dies, they give you a lot of choice, not "one size fits all". If your loaded cartridge neck diameter measures, for example), .250", then you would be able to use a .248" dia. bushing resulting in enough tension to hold the bullet, or use a .247" bushing for a hunting-type round: your choice. A big advantage of the bushing die is that the case neck is not over-sized much smaller than necessary, then requiring you to use the case expander button, which has been proven to pull the case neck out-of-alignement/ off-center, resulting in a lot of loaded round runnout. Since the brass is being "worked" only as much as necessary, cases will last a lot longer before developing the split in the neck area. FL neck bushing dies are the only way to go, I've not bought a set of "conventional" dies in years. Pickup a "hard copy" of Sinclairs' catalog for some good illustrated explanations. thanks alot guys, so I am right in the fact that with a FL type s die I can size only the neck or I can FL size the case depending on how the die is set up in the press?

That is correct to a point. The F/L bushing die will size the case a certain amount even with the die adjusted out of the press somewhat but it will be a limited amount. But, you have the right idea. Bill

I just received my Redding FL sizing die with bushings today and set it up in my press. My problem was not getting enough neck tension with my original Dillon dies. By changing bushings I can size to the neck diameter that gives me the neck tension I want without crimping.
