Redding Competition Seating die for 45ACP

I have tried a few seater dies. I bought one of the Redding 9MM seater dies. I liked it so much that I bought another for my other die set up. Works great and seats the bullets straight, and easy to change the bullet seat depth. DJB

Since I’ve loaded a BUNCH of 45 ACP over the years , being a Bullseye shooter, I’ll offer the following. Most pistol dies tend to over-size the brass due to trying to accommodate variances in chambers and brands of brass. After seating ALL cases will show a bulge at the bullet base and a cartridge with the bulge to one side indicates the bullet wasn’t seated straight. The problem is usually in the expansion more than the seating die. Sleeves could help but the key is proper expansion.

To get proper expansion, spend your money on a Lyman “M” die . If your using a Dillon expander replace it with a “M” die expander. You can get an “M” expander for a Dillon measure here. http://uniquetek.com/product/T1582

Another issue with seating dies is bullet alignment issues caused by the seating stem. With SWC you want to seat from the shoulder of the bucket, not the nose or the tip. For FMJ “hardball” the nose is not a true ball shape so relieve the center of your stem so you seat on the ogive, just like a rifle bullet.
She gets it...

What happened to shooting wad cutters for bullseye
The service teams don’t Handload for pistol. The ammunition companies quit making 185 FMJSWC except for Federal so they turned to custom loaders and they submitted 185 HP which easily met the grouping requirement. The best 185 HP was the Nosler and they market it as Custom Competition. Load it to about 750 fps and it’ll shoot as well as the Federal or better. The best powder is Vhitavouri N310, but Bullseye and WST work very well. The key is to keep the velocity down below 800.

I just wish the ammo companies would load their 185 HP to 775 fps as a Target load.

I'm shooting once a week with a EDC Colt New Agent in 45ACP it's a 3" 1911 Distance 21' . Different type of shooting then bullseye . Not in the cards for me with two blown out rotator cuffs , kind of hard holding my arms up . I'm a benchrest shooter 308 cal. bolt action more my speed . I keep my reloads on the low side of the scale for both . I do want to produce the best reloads possible . Hanks for your input .

The NA 3" 1911 is surprisingly a very accurate little pistol it came with CT Laser grips , it's a fun gun to shoot .

I use to carry an officer model that surprised me I could a target at 20 yards

Trough sights weren't so hard to get use to , most point an shoot guns you'll get use to whatever runs across the top . The dual spring assembly worked well but it looked like the weakest link on the firearm . Changed mine to the EGW single flat spring with reverse plug assembly . Much stronger assembly and runs smoother without a problem .

That would be great, I'm parcel to the CMP hardballer with iron sights etc. To me it's a hell of a challenge to shoot small off hand at 50 yards.
Some folks are so good it amazes me.
Thx RW

You’ll be glad to know the CMP changed the rules. All the ammo has to be is jacketed. And you can use a LOT of pistols not just the 1911 and M9.
