Redding competition 30br dispenser question

Quick question for anybody who owned one of these. I picked it up used and loaded it with h4350 tonight. When I tried to measure a 35gr charge, it came out 25gr. Is this because of the powder I’m using, or does it need to be calibrated some how?

Thanks

the short range guys that still throw charges use clicks on their powder measure to discuss loads. if you notice the sticky at the top of the reloading page you will see a mandatory: you must list charges by grains not clicks.

let us know what kind of consistency of charge weights you get with that powder measure. always curious. getting consistent charges with one is an art. most certainly the fastest way to charge cases.

Above is correct. You will need to drop several loads to get the right drop.If you are using a Varget shaped and sized kernels, you are not going to get very consistent drops and will vary up to 1/2 grain either way. Finer powder will be no problem.

I’m using H4350. So I’m sure I will never get a accurate charge

depends on what you are trying to do. some nodes are 2 or 3 tenths wide. short range benchrest guys have been very sucessful throwing charges for decades. finer powders are much easier to throw consistent charges.

With this powder drop and Varget, I have generally experienced an infrequent variation of =/- 4/10ths of a grain on a drop. Most are within one or two. You are going to be able to tell by how easily or hard the rotation of the drum feels. I set it a mite low and trickle a few kernels to get it to weight desired rather than use a pair of tweezers to shove kernels out of the pan. I load anywhere from 22.1 to 22.7 grains depending on bullet weight. I have found it to be spot on when comparing weight with an electronic scale after trickling Varget.

with a powder measure you have to practice. same rhythm every time. some tap twice a the top. some try not to tap at all. consistency is the key. hard to do when you are cutting kernels of extruded powder. practice weigh your charges and see if you can get a rhythm that is consistent.

Did you get a baffle with the measure? If not, it will make getting consistent loads easier. You can also make one out of thin aluminum or cardboard. My 30BR is great, as is my old Saeco.
