Redding comp. seater die erratic

Got the 7-08 comp. seater die and it's not seating the 162 Amax consistently. Sometimes spot on but over 50 rounds it's varying as much a .005".

Thought I heard something about the VLDs being to long so it was bearing on the tip and not the ogive.

How are you measuring the OAL?--off bullet tip to case base or off the ogive? And are you sure the bullets are consistent to start with. With one box of "big brand" bullet I had, I found variances in bullet base to ogive lengths of up to .018",Eighteen thousandths). After loading rounds, if I then measure from base to tip I saw major variances in OAL even if the seater manages to get the ogive in the same place relative to the casemouth.

The other thing I can say is that, if you're running heavy neck tension, it will be difficult to seat all bullets with the exact same amount of shank in the neck, even when base to ogive measurements of the bullets are very consistent. When you are fighting a lot of neck tension, some bullets sort of get stuck and you end up just driving the seater stem into the jacket, making a nice little ring.

I am not sure when Redding changed the bullet seating inserts on these dies, but some of them were not cut deep enough to allow the tip of VLD style bullets into it without making contact which can cause erratic results. Take a look at the tip of the bullet on loaded rounds to see where contact is being made.

If you are shooting compressed loads these dies may not work well...Redding disclaims responsibility for damage caused to the die when using compressed loads. If you are using a great deal of neck tension you may encounter similar difficulties.

The Forster BR series of seaters are sturdier in my experience.

I was running into the same situation with my RCBS Compition Seater and found out that the VLD Bergers would botton out in the seater stem. Had one, seater stem) modified to accept the longer bullets by RCBS and that cured the problem. Can seat anything now with no problems.:D

Erratic neck tension will cause erratic seating depths...just another thing to add to the list of things to check :)

Seating variance of .005 from top to bottom is not worth tearing your seater die apart for. Seat them .020 longer and measure the variance. Doubt if you will notice this on your target.
