Redding comp. die bullet runout

Hello there

I wonder, if you can help me, with a speciffic problem.

I do not know all, about reloading, but it is not new to me ;D

Recently i startet up with Redding comp. dies and the bushing neck seizers. In 6.5 x 55 it is perfect - just about no runout.

Something else in 308 win. The fired cases are ok - less than .001 unturned. But when i neckseize them it goes to .003
and the bullet runout is then .004 - .005

Not what i was looking for :-\

I have to set the neck back .01, to get just over .001 tension

I really have tried to get it right, but nomatter, what i try the result is the same ???

Regards AB

AB, Have you replaced the expander ball with the little black decapping pin holder? You should only have to use a bushing .002-.003 under loaded round diameter at the neck to get a nice smooth grip on the bullet. If you are using the expander ball, it could be pulling your necks out of alignment. Also no matter what bushing you use, your necks won't get any tighter than the circumference of that expander ball.

@ chuckhunter

No I do not use expanderball, the cases are fired in a SAAMI
spec. chamber, and it is just the normal difference, from a standard chamber, and to a normal 30. cal. bullet.

But thank you - you are right - that would do it ;)

Reading other topics, i see that it will be a problem, to set the neck back, by more than .005", and i´m at twice that amount.

The question is now - can i get a good result by making the neck-seizing in two steps ?

Or - must i get a costum seizer die. I want that .001" max runout.

Thanks for helping out !!

Redding does say in their Tech section that you could size the necks in steps.

Yes - something i have to give a try, but there must be others
out there, with the same problem.

Is the step by step going to fix the problem 100 % or is it only half a solusion.

If you're sizing down .010" I'd go with a Lee Collet die that will most likely keep the neck runout on your big neck chamber’s good brass under .001”.
If you have turned your case necks to true them up you may need to alter or order a new center pin for the collet die to get the amount of neck tension you want.
If you have not trued your necks the collet die and then the bullet will push any uneven neck thickness to the outside. Uneven neck thickness will show as neck runout even if the neck opening is on center axis.
But the Collet die does not touch the shoulder or body. So like with an S die you may have to eventually body size.

Thank you Bill - for your info - if i can´t get the two step, with the Redding to work - i will go with the Lee Collet die.

My chamber is a perfect SAAMI match chamber - and nothing can be done, with the bullet diameter.
I have slightly more than .001" necktension

My Norma brass thickness in the neck is .014 - Lapua is .015,
so my status is normal, as far as i can tell ;)

Thanks

AB, I don't get here often so I'm ressurecting this old thread. I must agree with BillS.

I had exactly that with a 300WM, Redding Comp dies and thin WW brass. I sized from 340 with a 330 bushing. I tried the interim steps to no avail and certainly don't want to be swapping out bushings and sizing twice. It really just didn't help.

My runout went to almost nothing with a Lee Collet. They are not without their own challenges, but with a bit of time and patience seem to work great.
