Redding BR30 leaking powder around case mouth?

I've had a BR30 for about 25 years and just purchased a replacement factory drop tube and pulled out and threw away the old chewed up one. Works just fine with the 6mm I've been shooting, but I just loaded some .223 ammo and the 8208 was leaking around the case mouth. Not a lot, just a couple of individual kernels. If I hold the case perfectly it seems to work fine, but if it's off a little bit the powder leaks.

The annoying thing is that it gets down in the case block and wedges against the case and the wall of the block and makes it a pain to pull out of the Sinclair block. Grrrr.....!

Anyone else have this issue, any suggestions?

Are your case mouths square? Do you have case lube inside the necks, causing the powder to hang up?

If these are not issues, then the taper inside the new drop tube may be too gradual, may not be concentric or its ID may be too large.
Check to see if the case shoulders might be contacting the inside taper before the case mouth is snug against it. It might just be a defective tube or have a bugger in it.

One other potential cause might be if your case necks are a little short.

Get a loading tray that prevents the cases from wobbling -or-Remove each case from the tray and charge it by holding the case tighter against the drop tube -or-dispense the charge into a good fitting funnel (such as a Saturn caliber specific funnel) placed over the case- or- buy a Sinclair upgrade # 749-010-851SZ and a Sinclair drop tube of your choice.

LH,

Who makes or sells a tray that prevents cases with tapered bodies from wobbling?

I have seen a similar situation. In that case the case was making contact with the drop tube with its shoulder, keeping the mouth of the case from coming into contact and allowing powder to leak as the case was charged. Perhaps you can shorten your drop tube or reshape the taper where it is supposed to make contact with the case mouth.

Yeah, I know. It seems the trays from the big makers never seem to capture the case just right. Perhaps the best block would be Sinclair's extra deep poly blocks. FWIW, when I do drop from a measure, I take the case out and hold it tight to the drop tube. Never had a problem leaking with Sinclair drop tubes when used in that manner. I do place a white cloth underneath the drop just to make sure all the powder goes where it is supposed to.

Thanks for the replies. The cases are all trimmed on Guiraud so they are all the same length.

I have a Saturn funnel, and use it for my long range ammo that has weighed powder charges, but this is for my short range ammo and I just want to drop it into the cases. I loaded some more ammo last night and had the same problem. Anyone have a link to a replacement drop tube?

Here is an update. I purchased a Redding long drop tube that is a slip fit over the regular drop tube. Works like a champ. I'm guessing the original one I replaced was out of spec a little bit.

CNC Shooter.com....(Tom Sz????) site member makes some first class blocks. I have quite a few and they hold the cases securely. Workmanship is first class and they happen to look great also. Their weight solved my problem of occasionally knocking the whole block over.
