recountour a barrel?

I would like to rebarrel a Tikka 30-06 I have to a 6.5 Creedmoor.
I have a Savage 30"barrel (SS) that was a 6.5 x 284 that quit shooting good enough at 600yds at about 800 rounds.
My question is - Can the barrel be recountoured and rechambered into a hunting rifle barrel (# 5 contour or lighter)?
Is it a waste off time? Will the barrel "warp" after being turned down?
Anyone ever try it? How bad could the accuracy be? Not wanting to wait 16 weeks for a barrel blank from any of the barrel makers.

Yes, rechambering is an easy task for most any gunsmith. But first, have it borescoped to determine whether there is firecracking of the bore. If so, you are probably wasting your time and money.

Changing the contour is another matter. It can be done, but must be stress relieved afterward. How well it will shoot afterward is a crapshoot. Only a few gunsmiths will recontour. I believe RW Hart is one of them.

Personally, with 800 rounds down the tube, I think you would be wasting your money.

I tend to agreed with tenring. After all the expense you still have a crapshoot. I would check with Bruno's and see what he has for barrels. If you have to buy a blank a little bigger than you want, kreiger will re-contour as long as the barrel is a blank. Just a thought. ;D

+1 on a new one. Besides, recontouring by your smith takes time on their lathe and that equates to money, money you could put towards a new one.

I have taken a 30" Kreiger barrel with an unknown round count and re-contoured and re-chambered it. I believe that I took about 3# off of the barrel. It is now a 24" - 284 that sits on a lightweight action. I have no idea how accurate the barrel was before but I can tell you that it is more than accurate enough for hunting. Normally in the 1/2 minute range. Can you change stresses ? Yes, but the trick is NOT to create a lot of heat as the contour is reduced. It may not work everytime but I've done it more than once with the same results.

if re-contouring a barrel induces stress that has to be relieved, do you have to stress relieve every barrel that is cut from a barrel blank?

There are a whole lot of barrels that shoot that have been contoured from a straight blank. Also a lot of companies that contour after rifleing.

Look at bugholes.com . They usually keep some barrels in stock, from several different makers. Good Luck.

Yep. It's not expensive at all. My gunsmith has a CNC barrel contouring machine and will contour to whatever you want for only $40.

I'm building a 338-375 Ruger hunting rifle and Brux only had a 31" heavy 33 cal barrel. I didn't want to wait 4 months for a barrel to be made to my liking so I bought the long heavy barrel and will just have my gunsmith turn it down to a little lighter contour for a hunting rifle.

With 800 rounds fired in a 6.5x284 your barrel has both feet in the grave...Dont spend money on it..Look for a less expensive new barrel that will be plenty good for hunting..LT
