Recommended Target Backboard Materials?

Our club uses a 4x8 sheet of Homasote with asphalt on both sides, it works great but the price has doubled to about 50$ a sheet. What do you think would work as well, or better?

ty Don.

Coroplast- the material real estate and political signs are made of. My club uses 18" x 24" x 4 mm thick. I buy 150 at a time through Beacon Graphics.com. A 4 x 8 sheet would best be purchased at Home Depot or Lowes. Homasote around this area has been off the market for years, but it was the material of choice for IBS matches. If you know any realtors, they may have old signage used for industrial lots -usually 4 x 8 x 1/2 thick.

Contact any screen printing shop and they will sell you coroplast. They might also be able to find "seconds" for you.
Also contact anybody you know running for office. My mom was on the school board for many years. When she finally hung it up I kept her signs. I'm still shooting at them.

Also, talk to your shooters about not putting targets in the same place everytime. I would imagine that most of your shooters are decent shots. if you are a decent shot staple your paper in the corner! Sorry, this is a sore spot for me.

At the range I'm a member at the backboards are just OSB plywood. It gets shot up before it deteriorates. It's the targets some people use that are laughable. Lots of B27 pistol targets set up at 50, 100 and 200. They fire AR's and AK's at them and I'm not sure just what the object is other than just to see if they can get a hit shooting offhand. Before every deer season all sorts of target mayhem takes place. In the off season not many people show up at all and since Covid there isn't much brass left lying around except various rimfire brass.

I like placing four 6" shoot-n-see splatter targets in a 4 leaf clover pattern on a 600 yd chloroplast target to save the center. Centered on the 9 ring @ 0, 90, 180, and 270 degrees. Shotmarker scores funny but I can tell where my shots are, even the ones outside the 1 MOA targets.

I wait until after an election is over and then collect a couple hundred of the small yard signs from the local voting precincts. Best target backers made.

I have about a100 of these sitting in my garage. All about 18x24. I also have a bunch of the illegal real estate signs.

I replace the backers at my club when I go there. Normally the club just uses cardboard and it gets wet and won't hold a staple.

We use rubber conveyor belting between 4x4's with a couple 2x4 stringers. The rubber is mostly self healing and you can staple targets to it.

IME conveyor belting is short-lived for club ranges that see a lot of use. Doesn't take long until all that's left is the outside edges with nothing left to fasten to. Also you end up trying to fasten targets over hundreds of staples sticking out proud which precludes any chance of getting clean bullet holes -IF you're the kind that likes to measure your targets. Coroplast backers are easier to replace, the staples go flush, or pull out easily. At my personal range I slide them into vinyl siding J-channels mounted to wood frames.

Can you attach the targets with staples or do you need to use tape?

Ride around Greenville SC and pull up signs. They are not legal! And if you need roofing, stump grinding, pressure washing, etc etc you’ll have plenty of numbers to call.
I'm the neighborhood sign removal detail. Some make it hard - I have to stand in the back of my truck with a rake to pull them off of telephone poles.....

Ha, I got two today. I think I gather a bunch up over time and drop them off at gate at local range.. Maybe they will choot 'em...
