Recommended Defensive Shotgun?

The shotgun you’re the most familiar with. If you’ve never shot anything but an over under, that’s what you will have fewer mental malfunctions with. If you’ve never owned a shotgun a break action single shot, short barrel 12g kept unloaded with an elastic shell holder on the buttstock is a perfect place to start. With a bigger budget a short barreled side by side. For smaller or inexperienced shooters a 20g will encourage more practice.

If you’re an avid shooter and plan on each potential user of the gun burning a box of shells every month, get something fancier.

Take someone who never shoots, put them under pressure to protect themselves and watch how they can’t even remember how to operate the safety on a loaded Remington 870 - the dumbest criminal in town can then walk up slowly and club them like a dodo bird.

Benelli M3 - Super 90

The Mossberg is a great option as well. I looked at them at the NRA show earlier this year. To me whatever your choice is, if it functions 100% with your preferred ammo and you have confidence in it go for it.

I maintain a Benelli as well as an old Savage Stevens for duty.

I would not recommend buckshot if you have loved ones present in other rooms of your house.
Yes sir!!
#6 bird shot will stop an intruder dead, but not blow through the walls, in close quarters the #6 hasn't spread giving the offender the full payload.
A nice side x side is quite and efective.
I don't want to alarm the intruder by working the slide on a pump or an autoloader, as they may be armed as well.

I took a defensive firearm class about 20 years ago and the instructors were adamant about not using anything with a long barrel (rifle- shotgun). They all said handgun held close to chest. Reason the barrel cannot be grabbed and pulled away from you. So I have a couple of Colts in different spots around the house, no kids or grandkids snooping around.

I do love a side by side but i wish to shoot more than 2 large holes! And 12ga is very capable of that.
