Recommendation on new deer rifle

As much as I hated to I finally had to retire my 30-06 Remington 740 Woodsmaster , I am looking at the Savage 110 Trail hunter model 58038. Anyone have an opinion on this rifle or another out of the box bolt that that will shoot well with factory ammmo? Having not had to look for one for over 50 years I am out of touch on this subject. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Another vote for Tikka. Smooth action and the barrel will be more predictably accurate. Some Savages shoot great, but I have two friends who had to send their new Savages back to factory because the barrel was really bad (one a .308 Win, the other a .30-06). The Tikka trigger is better than the standard Savage trigger IMHO.

Tikka again. I’ve helped several family and friends the last few years with new rifles. The vast majority have been Tikkas. They just shoot, I did have one that had to have the chamber cleaned up, accuracy was there but it was showing pressure way too early but that’s out of a couple dozens rifles and an anomaly.

The basic T3X shoot as good as any of them, they make several models. Personally I like the Roughtechs. They offer wood stocks if that’s your thing. Tough to go wrong with Tikka for an out of the box factory rifle that is accurate, feeds well, has a decent trigger and is made well.

Europtic is having a sale, some models are over 40% off of retail. Link below.

Depends on where you are hunting, what the bag limit is and how many days/hours you are hunting a season.

Sounds like you are at least 65-70 years old---whow much longer will you be hunting. (A long time I hope)!

Savages are a very reliable rifle and can be bought at a reasonable price.

Did I tell you about the guy who bought a .257 Weatherby Magnum with a 6-20X scope to hunt in the dense woods----OH BOY!

Use common sense in your purchase----don't be like the guys who buy $100.000.00 monster trucks with duel rear wheels and big hemis or diesels just go to church on Sunday!

Budget?

Tikka is great; and if a reasonably priced synthetic stocked rifle is what you're after i agree with the suggestion. If you're looking at walnut and this might be your last new rifle I'm recommending a new Winchester Model 70. Tikka will almost certainly be more accurate, but a M70 will certainly be more accurate than your 740 ever was and they're a joy to shoot or just look at.

If a guy likes to 'tinker', Savages have a lot of aftermarket parts and mods you can do. But.

You're still stuck with that bolt lift.

I'm not a fan of the heavy bolt lift and you can't do much with it. Improved? Yes, it can be improved to a point. But I still find it heavy compared to others.

Just my opinion.

There is no shortage of guys who LOVE Savages. That's the great thing about having options. To each their own.

After reading all of the above and checking around I have decided on the Tikka T3X Lite with the synthetic stock. The best price I found was at a Fleet Farm not far from me for $650. Thanks to all of you for your thoughts on this, it really did help me out, this is a great site and members like you guys are a big part of what makes it great! Thanks again
