Recommend a tight tolerance long action.

I'm considering starting a 30-06 build based on the 208 Amax and RL17. That being said, I'm looking for an action that's built to tight tolerances so I can push that combo to the max. I'm wondering if just getting a rem or winchester long action and having it trued would be enough, or if it'd be worth getting the firing pins bushed as well? Or if I should just go with a custom action?

You have more choices than you can shake a stick at. Factory actions have worked for millions of people, so I'm sure it would work for you. Take your pick of custom actions depending on your style of shooting and preferences. You'll have to narrow it down a lot further before folks can provide more useful and specific advice. Defiance Machine makes great Remington clones and would be my custom recommendation.

I hear Barnard makes a really nice long action, as does BAT. But if you want to go with another action that is more of a Remington clone, a Pierce, Borden Timberline, or a Stiller Predator would all be suitable, as would many others.

If you don't already have an action to work with, the cost associated with truing and timing a factory action after it's purchase will likely be more than simply buying a custom. Costing you more in the end, and also having a product with far less value.

If you want to save a bit of money and still have an action that is better than a factory Remington, the Savage Precision Target action is capable of great accuracy, and is usually a good bit straighter than a factory Remington as well. And you can install the barrel yourself without the need for a smith.

Whatever you do, avoid the expense of having a Remington re-worked, you will be much happier and have more money in the end.

Marksman (name?) I have three long-range rifles built on Borden actions, one a .30-06 another a .308 and the third a 6mm; the actions have been just perfect for that use. Smooth, perfectly machined and good looking to boot. I can recommend them without hesitation. There are plenty of others, and I have some of those, but my next purchase will be another Borden.

Marksman,

I have been there and done what you are doing. A tuned Remy will run you what a Remy custom clone will cost, and both will be a great action. I have done this and have still ended up with full custom actions. You will not go wrong with a Bat. Save yourself money in the long run, go full custom.

I would either go with a Bat or Defiance machine with a .750" bolt.

I have never falt a bat that wasen't slick as snot and fit together like the parts grew their
