recommend a barrel

I have a Tikka T3x in 223 varmint and want to buy a new barrel. What length and twist rate is recommended for 77 and 80 SMK's and 80.5 Berger fullbore bullets

7.5 to 8 inch twist. Length depends on what you are doing. 16 inch suppressed is handy. 30 inch for iron sights or ftr where the longer sight radius and extra velocity is needed. Some where in between for carrying and handling. 22 to 24 inches is a nice compromise.

Get a 7 twist. Length will depend on use. I use a 27" 7 twist on my long range .223 with 75 ELD-Ms and have shot to 1150 yards in a match with it.

this is for benchrest shooting matches. What would you recommend?

Honestly if you're shooting benchrest matches less than 300 yards, like club matches or something like that, I think you couldn't go wrong with that Berger 80.5 in an 8-twist. Those things will really shoot small and are very consistent.

As far as which cartridge I suppose it would depend on how much trouble you want to go to. The 223 Ackley shoots incredibly well and is super easy to tune.

our benchrest matches are at 300 yds. I have tried the Berger 80.5 and am having a hard time to get them to shoot. 77 and 80 gr SMK's shoot better for some reason. I was thinking the 80 would shoot better with a 1 in 7 twist, I could be wrong Occasionally I go to Ridgeway and shoot out to 800 yds but only a couple times a year

Not in my barrels. The 80.5 hammers in the 8 twist.

won't the 52's move around a lot more in the wind?
You don't see any of us shooting heavy 6MM's in our PPC's. Accuracy triumphs everything else in the short range game. 300 yds. is short range. Look at the results of the Tack Driver match. Short range guns dominate. I shot 300 yd. pistol BR. Most guys tried to cheat the wind with 7's and 30's. I routinely beat them shooting a 22 American. ( 219 Donaldson) Accuracy and wind flags will win out every time.

Thank you for the information I appreciate it. Have you shot Berger bullets?

HA! I love that. beat them with a rimmed cartridge. That's something I would love to build.

The reason I am interested in SMK 77 and 80 grain is because I just came into 2500 of them from a friend that retired from shooting because of vision issues. Also some Berger 80.5 fullbore and 73 gr 75 gr and 77 gr
