Recoil 223 build

Gents,
I have to have a few surgery's, neck, shoulder, wrist and likely elbow. I know its a lot to swallow! But this will keep me from shooting for a year. Except because I just cant give in I have a hope.

If I get a manners t4 a stock, defiance action, 30 inch 1-7 twist 223 in a mtu or heavy palma and chamber it to 223 or 223 ai.

My question is hoe is the recoil shooting a 90 grain berger? Would i need a muzzle break too?

Less than 2.5 lbs of energy with a 10 lb gun according to QuickLOAD recoil calculator. What you are looking to build with scope will weigh more than the 10 lbs. In doubt....put a brake on it. Hope the surgery goes well.

I have a 20" 6 br and shoot the 105s. Its in a manners T2A with the suppressor this rifle is a baby to shoot it hardly moves. I have shot .223 with the 90 gr bullets and was shocked at how much recoil they had for just a 223. Guess I shot too many small bullets thru the 223s and kind of got used to that. Any way what ever you go with put a 308 can on it and it will calm it right down.

Thanks for the info guys, I am waiting on a trust to get done so your right by the time it gets here Ill be healed haha. The 223 ai seems to be competitive and with a break and heavy barrel I hope I can handle the recoil. Last night after my first shot I hurt so bad that this might not even be an option.

What about .22LR benchrest or 200 yard FTR (does that exist?)? I know a lot of guys shooting .22LR prone matches, and these guys are some of the best midrange/longrange shooters I know.

If you can comfortably get into multiple positions look at air rifle field target matches.

My AR as weighted for comp is 11.5lbs, I can free-recoil shoot with this set-up (not that I do any better that way). I don't have a break, just standard 11° crown. Bolt action rifle for someone sensitive, I'd recommend threading the barrel anyway, who knows if you might want a suppressor or break later.

Lot of $$$$ to lay out before major surgery, you are quite optimistic!

Might look into on of those "sled" rests that holds the whole gun and may allow you to be back a bit from the buttstock.

Another idea that may help, wear a life jacket when shooting - helps tame recoil immensely. I will put one on when shooting big magnums, makes them a joy to shoot with all that foam padding taking the hit.

JP Tank Brake should also help.

Best of luck, hope you heal quickly!

Another option, back during the p. dog wars, we ordered McMillen BR stocks with 2/3 of the front end empty and the butt empty. I mixed up a solution of casting resin and #9 bird shot, today I use lead wool.

The stock, 30" unturned blank, rem 700 with 6" of the barrel bedded, ends up weighing 28 lbs. Then we have a variety of 243 AI's on this type of stock with muzzle break on the barrel. The 243 AI kicks like a BB Gun, you see your bullet impact on every shot.

This is a very good option for you for your surgery, carrying a heavy gun is going to be your hardest thing to accomplish.
