Rechambering Jap barrels

I have 2 Jap rifles,a T99 and a T38.. I'm trying to find someone who will rechamber them. No luck.. Could it be the hardness ? Maybe it's hard to keep down chatter? Dont know.. Any thoughts?

You are 55 years too late. Back in the 40's, 50's, and 60's, every gunsmith worked on these because they were everywhere. Not so much now. About the only caliber the 6.5 can be converted to is the 6.5/257 Jap Roberts. Not sure about the 7.7 gun.
The bolt faces are not standard to anything we are using today.
Nobody is tooled up for them any more.

I dont think its any diff than any other gun , Ive done many , years ago . Now its worth more to a collector , even if its just for parts , than its worth to rechamber. You will have $100 + for a rechamber on the japs ,at least . The steel isnt hard , the chrome lining on the 7.7 is another story . Attorneys are much more prevelent now , liability insurance is now mandatory .
The 7.7 would be set back to 300 savage or opened up to 30-06 ,which was unsafe .
The 6.5 was like said earlier opened up to 257 roberts .
Sell the guns , go to wal mart buy a modern rifle ,Mossberg , axis , rem , an be ahead in accuracy ,and safety.

It's more fun getting a gun to shoot that everybody says dont do. The way I see it,anyone can buy a rifle at a store and be able to shoot it. It's the journey..Also, I know all the horror stories that's out there. Some true, some not.If you play with these rifles,be sure to get as early as possible years. The only thing I havent done to them is rechamber. I had heard they were hard to do b/c of the hardness .Right now,for the 7.7, I shoot 52gr.IMR4350 pushing 150gr.Horn. bullet.Accuracy 1.3" @100yds.The 6.5. .XBR8208,pushing 129,139,140gr. Accuracy :'(. Still working on different bullet and powder combos. It does not like boattails.

You really wont be gaining any accuracy improvements by rechambering . The brass that was available NORMA is very good . All you will be gaining by rechambering is more velocity and cheaper cases .
Because of bore variations , rechambering can produce an egg shaped , bananna shapped chambers , even of course when using removable pilot reamers. ER SHAW will rebarrel a jap for the normal cost . I still have my dads 7.7 that was rebarreled to 6 mm REM . Its got a dayton traister trigger, richards microfit stock, and converted to cock on open . To do all that work today I could buy 2 Savage Axis rifles .
Good luck

I had a 6.5x257 jap sporter years ago and sorry I sold it because it would shoot about 1/2 minute of angle. It was a real shooter for sure and I wish I could get it back.I have another in the original chamber and it shoots good but not as good as the rechambered one did.
