Rechambering a Lothar

I have a 28" stainless Lothar walter barrel I was looking to get rechambered from 260 rem to 6.5X208 AI
or 6.5X06 AI

Any suggestions or ideas, I hve found out that some places willnot touch a lothar barrel because of the harder steel. So i am faced with getting a new barrel from stratch which is not the best for me. I have alos seen 260rem ER shaw barrel i could get done.

any help would be great

Call Greg at gre-tan rifle's.Tell him what you have and see if he will do it.I dont see why not.Any metal is machinable.I cant figure out why lothars would be so hard, after all they drill and ream and rifle them.

Here is gre-tan's number 1-970-878-5421.If he wont, try some of the others on our home page in the left hand column of the home page.

I can't help with the re-chamber, but was wondering if the 260 is starting to get "shot out", or you just wanted something different? I ask because I have heard of the 'harder' steel and that they are supposed to last longer, and am wondering how many rounds of acceptable accuracy you got out of the 260? I have LW 6br, so just curious if I can expect an extra 500rds or xxx number...?? and I know every barrel is different, and they are expendable like bullets, powder, etc... and will need to be replaced at some point anyway.
Thanks!

Those barrels aren't harder, the steel is just tougher. And it really does last noticeably longer. Throat wear on my 22-250AI is less than 1/2 what I'd have expected. Some people don't like to machine them. It has to be done a little differently. But for someone who knows what they're doing it's not a problem.

Thanks guys for the info. I'll get called around here and let you all now what i find out

tallsdyotehunter ,

If a so said professionnal machinist refuse to work on a Wakther, it is simply because he has no confidence on his own skills.
Would eventually simply need a little more care.
