Rebuilding a rifle.

My dad gave me my first rifle when I was 11 years old, a Remington model 788 in a .243. Shot it so much I wore the barrel out. Rebuilding the rifle with a 1 in 12 twist barrel and a timny trigger for strictly for varmint hunting. Coyotes mostly. Wanting to shoot 70 to 80 grain bullets. Looking for suggestions on loads to tryout.

These are super accurate in my Savage:

80 grain Nosler
44.0 grains Hodgdon H4350

75-grain Hornady VMAX
44.0 grains AA2700

Welcome to Accurate Shooter. Great knowlege here.

At this time you may want to glass and pillar bed the action to the stock. After that, I like to re finish my stocks. Sanding, filling the pores, and tongue oil finish. Then finding and installing the proper scope. If you are with me so far, you may be a gun nut.

The 243 Win was my first rifle also - 50 years later I'm still shooting a 243 Win (different rifles these days).

I've tried a lot of load combo's over the years. The ones that have worked best for me are:

1. Sierra 85 BTHP with either IMR 4064 or 4350. - this would be my first choice - this is an all purpose load which can be used for varmints, predators and with proper shot placement deer. Shoots like a match bullet with outstanding terminal performance.

2. Sierra 80 Blitz same powder choices as above - excellent choice for long range varmint hunting. Flat shooting and outstanding terminal performance on small critters like ground hogs and predators but might make a mess of a predator's coat if you're into harvesting the fur.

3. Nosler 70 BT with IMR 4064 or 4895 - another good choice for long range varmint hunting - same fur concerns at the 80 Blitz.

Primers I like the best are Federal 210.

+1^^^ Nailed it for the 243. JME. WD

80g blitz-start at 40g of IMR 4064, fed 210, ease upward on the load till you see pressure and stop

70g Nosler-39g of IMR 4064, fed 210 works for me

I shot a lot of coyotes with the 80g, very lout PLOP when you connect!
