Rebore a 300H&H to ???

I've got a custom Rem 700 elk rifle in 300H&H and the barrel is on its last legs. Instead of re-barrelling I thought about doing a rebore. I've never done it but have read that it can give just fine hunting accuracy for much less than a new barrel plus install.
The question is what chambering? I'm no expert here, would 338 win mag work? Not sure there's enough material for a 375H&H. Any other ideas? Any recommendations on who to do the work? I've read JES is a good option. Thanks.

To answer, a 338 Win is too short to clean up the whole chamber. As GLZ said, a 340 Wby would do fine. So would 8mm Rem Mag, or any other full lenght Mag case.
Not to hijack a thread, but I too would be interested in any recommendations for smiths to rebore. We recently lost the only gentleman who did all that work in our area.

If your going to spend that kind of money, you are better off buying a new barrel. My buddy just put on a new Douglas on a hunting gun, its a 338 Rem Ultra IMP. And this gun really shoots, lights out. I believe Douglas is maybe a bit cheaper, but on a hunting gun, it wouldnt matter.

If they drill a new blank to make a new barrel and it gets messed up, they throw it away. What happens if you pay to redrill your barrel and they mess up? There can be inclusions in the steel and they hit one. It just seems like money wasted to me. Matt

I agree with Matt 100%. Good Barrels are not that expensive in the grand scheme of things. Buying a good barrel is always worth it in my opinion.

I agree, but not quite 100%. Not sure if I'd rebore one just as a money saving option, but having done a couple for other reasons, I have to say they both worked just like new barrels. Most quality steel (I'm assuming a good aftermarket barrel on the original build) is so free of inclusions and other imperfections, I wouldn't let that hold me back for a second. Looking at JES' site I'd also wager rechambering is included in the listed prices.

If it was my rifle, I’d seriously consider putting on a finish turned and chambered Shilen in 300 Weatherby Mag. The extra oomph from the bigger case is nice for an extra 50 yards for elk. In and out for no more really than a rebore. http://shilen.com/pricesRifleBarrels.html Douglas offers the same things at about the same prices.
