Rebarreling

Hello can you help me with the sequense and few tips while I rebarrel my first rifle.
I have onece cuted a chamber and that worked out fine, I'm a qualified metal turner.

I have bought Sheelen 6mm blank barrel 1,25" unturned.
What of the tasks do I begin with, crown, chamber, threads, outside?

Do you start to chuck it in and turn small area outside on the barrel at both ends with the insede running right to 0.01mm?
How do you crown a blank barrel, do you chuck it up at other end and use support for the outer end and then cut the crown.

When you turn the barrel outside surface do you have it between centers (that will damage the crown?) and when do you turn the barrel oudside, at first or last.

Can you help me with the steps here, some links could also be nice here ;)

Kind reg from Iceland,
EG

what sort of rifle is it ?

i always clock the bore at the chamber end then, cut tenon ,threads set the bolt nose clearance , than chamber

i then do the muzzle end , threaded for muzzle brack or sound mod then crown

hope your volcano,s stay ok

to add some more help , what type of profile are you goneing to make,
i have truned blanks , trun it between centres first(treat it as if to was a shaft ) , after you have cut it to lenght then do the steps above ?

Hello thanks for the reply :D

The rifle is BRNO (Mauser style action).
I will use streight profile for the barrel... apporx ø31mm.

When you camber the barrel do you chuck it at the muzzle and use support for the chamber end or chuck it near the chamber and let the rest of the barrel be inside the lathe? Same question here when I work on the muzzle end.

What degree do you use for the crown, 11°?
See this pic. http://riflestocks.tripod.com/steptypecrown.jpg
There they use 60° for the muzzle. It seems to be that most popular crown is 11°, is the a pic/drawing of that profile here somewere?
When I turn the barrel between centers to turn it externaly I have to cut 60° in the bore for the tailstock like you do when makeing mechanical shafts, I should then change this deg to the actual crown?

I'll try the moderator for the video.

And yes the volcano is here still, sleeping like a baby, but we never know what will happen ;)

Gordy s set up is in the head stock.
Alignment of the lathe is critical Axial especially.
Centers must be dead on. Gordy uses a spider on the back end of the headstock. The barrel is indicated at both ends using a range rod with a tight fitting live pilot. Two test indicators are used to make sure the barrel is centered in the headstock. The lathe is ran and the range rod is moved in and out of the bore and being measured by the test indictors. when you have absolute minimum run out.>0001 on the bore indication you can cut the threads, and then follow by reaming the chamber.
Later you turn the barrel around and cut the crown , At the mark and crown the muzzel. the 11 degree is the most popular but straight across and a 11 degree at just the bore is fine also.; To cut the 11 degree
You line up the tool straight to the muzzel. The dial in 11 degrees
On the compound. You feed with the compound, then finish the bore with a tool that has an 11 degree cutter. Followed by a good polish especially at the finished crown at the bore.

yes trun it just like a shaft ,

then here how i do it i just four jaw independent chuck hold the barrel near chamber end , then use a bush in back of lathe spindle to support the muzzel end,

same for crown but the other way round in lathe ,

i would not use a centre drill to do the crown , set your compound slide to 79 deg then use a very small boring bar to cut the crown

pm me your email and ill mail you some photos
