Rebarreling a Ruger M77

The last one I did, the receiver threads were .015" out of conentricity from the bolt raceway and crooked to boot. That was a tang safety gun.

Be careful how you grab the action to break loose the barrel, and don't over torque the new barrel.

There is no action easier to re-barrel than a Ruger 77. You can use the same inside wrench as for a Remington. or a flat outside wrench. WH
Maybe a post 64 push feed. About the same. Flat breech face, thread size and pitch. All that stuff. The pre 64, new ones and the controlled round ones are a different story. But yes, the Ruger is about as easy as it gets as long as you don't have any trouble getting the old bbl off/on. I think they're a cast action so while small, there's a chance of the action cracking but it's slim. Never had a problem.

Never seen or heard of a Ruger cracking. In addition, none of the Ruger 77's I've taken apart were tight at all. In fact, it got so my first move was to give a moderate tug with a 12 inch crescent wrench. They usually came right off. The exception were those rifles with sights; these were usually fairly tight. WH

Me either. Never had a problem, just repeating what I've heard in that regard.

This is way out of my league so probably a real dumb question but how do you get the extractor cut out to line up right with a barrel nut?
It's just a matter of timing it to where it lines up when tightened. There's some wiggle room in regard to torque, too. So a little more or less torque can line things up. But you're right. All dimensions are somewhat critical...headspace and bolt to tenon clearance and then timing up the cut when tight. It's magic! Lol!

This does not apply to a M77. Claw extractor, yes, but breeches up similar to a M98 Mauser. Give yourself .005" to .010" clearance from the most forward point on the bolt.
For claw extractor indexing see a post I made a few days ago on another forum. https://www.practicalmachinist.com/forum/threads/model-70-winchester-extractor-cut.418929/
Probably take a little figuring and fiddling to work with a barrel nut but I imagine it can be done.

Re. the barrel nut: I have a Ruger action to which I fitted Savage barrel. I threaded the barrel for the Ruger, then used the Savage barrel nut to lock it in place. There have been few times that I have used a nut; usually when the barrel diameter won't provide enough shoulder. WH
