rebarreling a model 700 recut the threads?

When rebarreling a remington 700 Is it really necessary to recut the action threads, or should I say are there major accuracy gains to be achieved by doing this?

I have heard two arguments, one is yes it should be done.

The other is no, as long as the end of the receiver, lug and barrel are square and it's all cinched up together the threads really don't matter they are just there to secure everything, they do not contribute significantly to overall "trueness"

I talked to a gunsmith today and I was surprised when he suggested option B , that provided everything else was true the threads were not a big issue. I did some searching and came across a post on snipers hide where there were conflicting points of view on this issue. Just interested to know what peoples thoughts are.

I am rebarreling a hunting rifle that I hope to shoot out to 500 yards or so on a tight budget, but don't want to cut corners if it will seriously compromise the build

Thanks in advance
Lurch

What did you have in mind as to any other way of securing the barrel?
The threads are 1 1/16 16 tpI as i remember, { It been a while}
The receiver needs the threads checked any way. Most of the time they are on a taper. at least the few i have done a while ago.

If your going to blue print the receiver you may as well go the complete route and recut the threads as well... It's already been dialed in so why not do it.
A hunting rifle may shoot as good as you'll need it to with out doing the receiver if your on a tight budget..
If the threads are not in line with the rest of the receiver you'll have a variable thats not needed for the best accuracy..
My twins correct on the 1-1/16X16tpi....

I have tried it both ways and found absolutely no difference as long as the threads weren't bad or bored crooked to begin with. To make sure we are talking about the same thing "recutting" as I understand it is really making the thread a little oversized and cutting the barrel thread larger accordingly. This allows for the machinist/smith to properly dial up the action in a lathe, pick up the old thread with the dial and make a corrective cut of whatever it takes to get a good clean thread. I clean the old thread up good and hit it with layout fluid and start with a .010" oversized thread. If the old thread was done poorly or had alot of misalignment then I go up from there until it is clean and shows little or no layout color. Match the barrel thread minus a few thou and go for it. However, as stated if it wasnt terrible dont expect to see alot of difference.
