Rebarrel a Remington 700

Ok so 2 years ago I bought a Remington 700 Long Range in .300 win mag. I will be 60 in July and this thing is kicking the snot out of me. (what was I thinking). I shoot .308, 6.5 Creedmoor, and .223 Remington. Was going to sell it but I like the gun since I put a better trigger in it. My friend has talked me into thinking about having it re-barreled, thinking on the lines of the 6.5 X 55 Swede. I know new barrel, bolt and all that goes with it. Anyone recommend a Gunsmith say within the New England area, prefer to do business in person, I live in Massachusetts (unfortunately) I am in no rush thinking about having it done in the fall, then I should be good for 2018 season, I mostly shoot 600 yards. Thanks, Dave

You did not say what you used it for but since you said usually shooting 600 yds, sounds like target, Either way, I recommend the ,260 or if you really want to be there sport, the .260 Ackley.

A brake is easier than a rebarrel. But a rebarrel should get you more accuracy--but a good rebarrel will cost the price of a new remington 700...a properly installed brake won't be cheap either.

Coincidentally today I shot a match with a friend. I just finished his 300 Norma Magnum yesterday. The 300 normal uses 90+ grains of powder to push a 230 grain bullet at 3000 fps. I put a 5 port 1.25" brake from muzzlebrakesandmore (forum member). the kick was less than my 6xc.

The aesthetically pleasing brakes that are radial and the same diameter as the barrel are by nature a compromise and less effective. If they are enough for you and the aesthetics are more important to you, then go for it. But if you want a lot of braking, go with diameter, side ports, and ports angled rearward. It is that simple.

6.5mm SAUM would be a good choice.

That's my next build, maybe this weekend. I couldn't resist the GA Precision name for the caliber--4S.

If you go with a Bolt Barrel and all the Lapping and tuning ?? Why not start over and sell it ?

Now on 6.5X55 I love it. Now a Good Gunsmith could bush you current bolt face ? Re-Barrel and off to the Range .
I shoot a 8.5 twist Kreiger 30" 1000 yard Rig. 142 MK or 140 Berger HB and the New Nosler 140 do very good .

Best of luck

Pretty available. GA precision sells the brass (called GAP 4S) that they contract Hornady to make. --Jerry

How readily available is factory brass for these calibers, I don't want to get into anything to complicated.

Good question. I have some 300SAUM and it would be easy to neck down and I think I have about 100 rounds of the 6.5 Remington Mag. I haven't had to look for any. My buddy that has a gunshop and shoots a lot, is building a 6.5 SAUM now. He necks down 7 SAUM brass.

Ya, most guys use the 7 saum Norma stuff. My reamer puts a 140 just inside a wyatts extended box, but you have to turn the necks. I have not had any Hornady stuff to see how thick the necks are. In my experience Hornady brass has always been soft. I played with the 7 LRM a while ago and all you could get was Hornady. It limited the case enough that it wouldnt shoot any faster than a 7mm rem mag.

I'm building my 6.5 SAUM on a long action that I harvested from a 300 WM. I plan to make the freebore longer so I can shoot 140s seated long.

Either would be good. I think Nosler offers 6.5 RM loaded rounds for sale and I don't think it would be too hard to find brass. I think I still have around 100 or so cases. The SAUM's are popular as well. Both should feed well.

I use the Hornady gap 4s brass in mine. I don't have to turn necks even with the tight .296 neck chamber. I have the .120 freebore reamer and feel like it's still too short. If I was building another one I'd go for something around .150freebore should seat the bullet out just about perfect.
