IF,your bore guide does not fit your cleaning rod,don't waste your time.

Purchase a quality guide or manufacture one to fit the action & chambering.
M1A bore guide-
Cut the crimp off a plastic 12ga shot gun shell hull.
Punch out the primer & Drill the pocket/flash hole to cleaning rod diameter.
Slip the guide/hull onto the rod,brass first & thread your jag into the rod.
The 12ga.shotgun hull slips over the outside of the flash hider.
Those using carbon cleaning rods-TREAD LIGHTLY & GOOD LUCK!
