Rear bag-what to get ?

I am very new at this form of shooting. I have purchased an entry level gun, Savage F Class in 6mm BR an am waiting daily for UPS to bring the latest accessory purchased. I have yet to pull the trigger.

My question is about the type of rear bag I will need. I have read all the topics on 1 row, 2 row or 3 rows of stitching, ear height, etc. I need the advice of someone whos been there done that.

The underside of the gun where the bag will be is FLAT and starts at 1 1/4" just behind the pistol grip and tapers to 7/8".
What width do I need between the ears and also what height ears would be needed.

Thanks in advance to everyone who will answer, and to those who have answered questions I had in the past.

Coverdog, Regardless of the height or width of the ears that you choose, by all means get a bag with the extra thick bottom. It will be much more stable. Larry in western Ky.

I have an Edgewood gatorbag with a right twist, which leaves you a place to rest you hand, and I love these bags. My rifle is rock solid in this bag.

I have the same rifle in 6.5x284 and have a Edgewood mini gator for the Shehane tracker stock it's 3/4" between the ears and also ordered a Protecktor DR bag that was 7/8" between the ears which I would like to say came in record time for a custom bag and they were very nice to deal with.
Both bags worked out fine not sure which one I like better.

CoverDog,can you tell us how you plan to "steer" the gun. Are you a "bag squeezer" using your rear bag to aim, or do you use the controls on your front rest to aim your rifle?

I bought the Edgewood original, at Sincair International. I feel this bag is too stiff for bag squeezing, so I use a Joystick front rest to aim.

My other rifles like my longrange hunting rifles, I use a taller eared caldwell bag which is softer I can move my point of aim using the rear bag easily.

Then I have a larger 25lb protector bag, for bench use.

Of all three, my favorite is the edgewood.

Rich44....I talked today with David at Protektor about thier Dr bag, and have put a check in the mail. Since we both have the same stock on our guns I have several questions for you.

I am waiting for a Caldwell Fire Control Rest due in tomorrow to let you know what type of rest I will have.

The question I need answered is how much space should I have between the ears? We were going with cordura, would leather be better)and Protektor said since the bottome of the stock goes from 1 1/4" behind the pistol grip and tapers to 7/8" they suggested a 1 1/8" spacing. This will let the bottom ride on the bag. Do you feel this is to wide?

With your 7/8" spacing does the stock ride on the top of the bag or is it somewhat higher. Do you have the Tall or Std. low ears.

I will give you any info you might need to help me get the proper rest.

Ok, with the firecontrol rest your going to have a cordura 3-lobe front bag, unless you opt. to change it out.

So you might order a cordura rear bag since that's what your front bag is. You can use silicone spray to lube it up, so the stock slides better.

With the fire-control being a joystick rest you won't be using your rear bag to control the aim of your gun. That's what the stick is for.

I believe Rich44 was the person with the same stock as you. So I can't help you there.
