Rear Bag Length

Nodak7mm

Team Lefse
Hi Folks,

Looking at the Edgewood bags to put on my list to Santa and am wonder what are the advantages or disadvangtages to a longer "base" rear bag vs a standard, shorter) rear bag.

Thanks

Except for his latest soft bag, all of Jack's bags are designed primarily for those who aim using their rests, so called knob twiddlers. For that shooting style, once the stock is settled between the ears, the rear bag is not moved, or generally touched. The greater weight and footprint of the Gator make it more resistant to being accidentally moved on the bench. Of the shooters that have tried long bags, I don't know of any that have switched back to a shorter one.

One point to consider is how the bag affects your trigger hand ...do you rest it on a separate bag, or plan to rest it on the gator bag, or use no bag under your wrist at all. They do offer the bags with an off-set so that you can use the gator as a place to rest your wrist. Without actually trying different set-ups, it's difficult to make a choice. Perhaps more important is height of the rear bag as 2 heights are offered I believe. My thinking would be to get the shorter one and add those rubber spacers Dohrman sells to accommodate the various ranges you attend.
Once upon a time everyone used the same $20 bag, now there's dozens of choices, some costing upwards of $200 ...not incl. 25# of zircon.
