Reaming 7.62 NATO to 7.62x54r

Ive got about 12 barrels remaining in std mauser thread and one in no 4 thread .
I added some material to my previous post about making the rifle eject with std 308 .
Remember the 2 ishapores were for the 7.62 nato and very long throat to keep pressure low .
I’ll PM you. Thanks!

Stupid question of the day...

Will a 2A1 bolt head fit on a No.4 bolt? If so, I expect it would make extraction and ejection of a rimless case more reliable.

No, The 2a is basically a No 1 Mk III but modified for 7.62 nato and the receiver is made of a type of Chrome-Moly or something similar, The extractor is different than that for a 303. The factory #4 extractor works great for 307 win, I took the L42 extractor back off.

Thanks, just wasn’t sure if a No.1-patterned head could be made to work with a No.4 bolt or not.

.307 Win will work for my personal needs, but I’m trying to come up with a solution in 7.62 NATO that works and is readily replicable. If I can do that, I can get Criterion to make a run of barrels.

Hey guys,

Excuse my ignorance, as I know very little about thread forms...

I'm talking to a couple of the custom barrel shops about this project, and the Whitworth form seems to be a sticking point.

Could I chase the threads in the receiver with a 1" x 14 TPI standard V-form tap so I can use a barrel with a standard 60-degree V-form tenon thread?

Thanks,

Lawndart

EDIT- McGowen replied to me and said they cut 60-degree V-form threads for 55-degree specs and that it won't cause an issue because of the tolerances built into the thread specs. If the fit is too tight, I'll just chase the receiver's threads like I mentioned above.

Can someone please measure the length of their front sight base from front to rear? This will help me establish the length of the journal on the barrel.

It would also be really useful to know both IDs in the barrel channel of the sight base so that I can set the OD of the barrel at that journal. I can always turn the base to an ID of .791" like the L42 has, but I'd like to know the original size so I can do a lighter barrel as well.

Thanks,

Lawndart

EDIT- Someone replied on another forum. Length front to back is .770", smaller diameter is .600".
