Reaming 223 to 22-250

I have a 223 barrel that I'm going to ream out to a 22-250. My question is this: Will the 22-250 reamer follow the 223 chamber or do I need to counterbore first. I am assuming the pilot bushing on the reamer will not reach the rifled bore? I have the lathe and necessary tooling but have only done short chambered barrels previously. Thanks for any insight you can give me.

I've only opened up 3 chambers for larger cases, but it appears to me that the reamer wants to self-center if it's done in the lathe. I wouldn't try it by hand. I didn't have any problem picking up the bore with the reamer pilots when they reached it. The smallest one was a .22 WMR to .22 K-Hornet. The largest was a .30 x .338 to a .30 x .378 Wby. That one went a long way before the pilot ever reached the bore. The other one was a 7mm Rem Mag to a 7mm STW. I didn't counterbore any of them because I was afraid that if I opened it up enough for the pilot to reach, the hole would be too big for the reamer to clean up. All 3 rifles are my own, and they are excellent shooters.

My tailstock is .0005" higher than the spindle bore, even clamped down hard, so I used a Clymer floating reamer holder on the 2 bigger chambers, but had to use a tapping handle and the live center for the little K-Hornet reamer. It came out just fine too.

I may have just been lucky, but lucky 3 times is pretty unlikely.

Good luck, Tom

Thanks for the reply. As I thought about counter boring, my concern was the same as yours. The bore size would have to really close and at the right depth for the reamer to clean up. Scared the hell out of me. Thanks again
