Reamers

I am sure this has been discussed B 4 -

The reamers I have used in the past are:

52-D
PTG Match
Lilja Match
Calfee (1)

Just overthinking as always about the Anshultz ream in the as it has been my experience that most Annie's seem 2 B a little more forgiving in their ammo preference as they seem to shoot all really well.

I like the 52-D BUTT it is a little tight in some cases the Lilja works well thinking with all the NEW IMPROVED rifles maybe a better reamer

Here is what it will B used for :Remington 40 X Jewell trigger Benchmark 3 groove in a Remington 700 classic stock may shoot some bottle cap matches and informal shoots.

Thanx

Jim

Hi Jim,
What ammo do you normally shoot? I have had great results shooting Lapua and having the barrels done using the Nevius reamer this is a 1.5 leade with minimum engraving.

I have the PTG Match, Lilja, & Freeland reamers. Several years ago I chambered a Benchmark 3G with the Lilja & it wasn't where I hoped the rifle was capable of shooting. I turned .025 or so off the breech & tenon faces & re-reamed using the PTG Match. While off I also remachined the crown & the rifle came alive.
Of course, have reamed & recrowned I'm not 100% sure which was the answer. I've done several barrels with the PTG Match since & all have shot well.
On a Shilen Ratchet I did a couple weeks ago I used the Freeland reamer to try something different. I left it a little short to get more engraving. Its a little snug for my liking as I can feel it in the bolt chambering a round. Initially I thought it was going to shoot but am going to have to change something. It is extremely ammo sensitive. I'll deepen the chamber 1st before going back to the PTG.
In looking at the Anschutz reamer specs I see it has a 1/2 degree leade. Much less than all the others which may explain why they shoot more brands of ammo better. If that is in fact what Anschutz used & are still using. Course, it could be their barrels too.?
I'd say try the Anschutz if you want & if it doesn't work out I think you could simply lengthen it out with either the Calfee, Lilja, or PTG reamers.
Thats my .02c.

I'm guessing a typo on one of the rogue dimensions.

Many years ago, back in the early 90's in the early days of Border Barrels, we made a number of barrels which went on to win Olympic championships and shoot world records. In those days, the "LR Match" reamer with its 5 degree throat was what we used and it performed very well.
Many years later I did a lot of work trying to make accurate rimfire barrels that would shoot Eley Tenex ammo and it proved extremely difficult. The five degree throat no longer worked. A 1.5 degree throat worked pretty well, but the barrel would stop shooting after 10k rounds or so. A 2 degree throat with 'C' = .600 (essentially the Calfee reamer) worked pretty well and the barrel life was somewhat longer.
I never really did manage to master the Eley ammo. Some barrels were spectacular, but would stop shooting after a few tens of thousands of rounds. Back in the 90's we had barrels that were still turning out ten shot 10mm groups at 50 metres after a quarter of a million rounds down the barrel. No more!

Hi DR. Kolbe,

Thank you for posting here. I was wondering were the barrels that shot so well in the early 90's SS or CM?
I heard CM was much harder steel and produced some very good barrels. IMO why Anschutz had some really good shooting barrels.
also what would your conclusion be on the Eley and chambering? was it more sensitive to ammo selection?

Lee

52d
PTG match
Anschutz
Lr sporting , held short to fit whatever ammo I'm using
These are in order of use and accuracy for me . I'm trying the heavier 45 gr ammo now ( soon ) at 100 yds starting with the LR sporting held short first .

Hi Lee
All stainless barrels. CM is not a very machinable steel and when you are cut rifling (as I was exclusively in those days) it is much easier to get the good finish a rimfire barrel needs using stainless steel.

We had a number of gold medals and numerous championship and world records shot with our rimfire barrels over the years, so I figure we were getting something right!

However, having said that, I put in a lot of work about ten years ago trying to find out what would make Eley shoot consistently well and I never did get to the bottom of it.

I know that Sergei Martynov used old Olymp ammo from the 1980s to win his Olympic gold in London in 2012. That was an amazing shoot where in the final, he put ten shots inside the ten ring! I know they had that rifle at Eley for testing at around that time and it was a scattergun. Nothing would group in that rifle. So, you have to ask yourself, was it the rifle that was no good and would not shoot the best ammo in the world? Or....?

Geoffrey,

I think he found some Tenex that worked. He shot Tenex in a couple of World Cup matches that season as well as Olymp, still smoking everyone, and later used at the European Championships/Games. That's assuming he used the same barrel, I imagine Anschutz would find something special in the back if he asked. Donald Macintosh, then the GB Coach, reported he shot a 600 with a mix of Olymp, Tenex, and R50 or Lapua in the eliminator at Fort Benning one year.

Dr. Kolbe,

I don't think it was the rifle. as it shot with another ammo to produce the Gold win. I don't know why, but having switched from Eley about 7-8 years ago and now shooting Lapua I just seem to find lots that shoot easier. even in recent RFBR Lapua has produced some very impressive numbers.
Did they find the magic again that the old Gold box Lapua had years ago? 2012 was I believe when finding good Eley was a problem.

I’m late to this thread, but I’ll put my .02 in the pot. I, along with a lot of people on this forum, shot a lot of Smallbore competition in our time. Mostly with factory barreled 52’s and anschutz rifles, so I’ve followed this sport from afar. One thing I noticed was that Kenyon triggers and barrel jobs were preferred by many Olympic shooters. This was in the 90’s and he told me he used Schneider barrels. A better authority than me would know if they won any medals. Comments.

Not sure, but i believe in read once that Lones's rifles were done by Karl

Karl preferred McMillan barrels, but Gary Schneider learned from McMillan and was what he used after McMillan stopped producing. He would put on whatever the customer wanted, but he preferred schneiders.

Karl put a Schneider 6groove on a 1913 for me, It got me NRA smallbore prone and position distinguished. It shot r50, lapua and eley well, that was the beauty of that rifke, it shot many different ammo well. My best agg with it was a 1600-145 with a scope. I loved that barrel and rifle, it was really good to me.
