Reamer repair or regrind?

Long story short I loaned a reamer to a guy on here my smith used on my barrel. Sent reamer to PT&G to make sure was sharp and good to go. As soon as the reamer arrives I mail to to member on here. Months later I figure he is finished with and I ask for it back and I get an...oh by the way that reamer had a chip in shoulder area....actually all the way around the reamer....Then tells me it was like that when he got it....now if that was the case wouldn't I see a noticeable ring on the shoulder of my fired brass that I had a barrel chambered with this exact same reamer?? He offered to have it fixed if it could be and I told him just to send it back if he is for sure he didn't do it don't send it in for repair Ill eat it....

Its a very small chip can these be repaired or reground to something else what are the options if unrepairable? It is a match 22/243 reamer at the moment. Thanks for any advice other than loaning reamers out

Could turn it down to a 22-250 AI. Should be pretty easy to sell it in that configuration because that is a pretty highly desired varmint caliber.

Or you could keep it for yourself and make some barrels with it. Still a fast and accurate 22 chambering.

Its hard to say over the internet, even with pictures. I have sent horizontal mill cutters and form cutters out to be sharpened, sometimes they can, sometimes they cant. Its really up to the tool grinders opinion. Send it to PTG.
And no, if he cut that chamber with that reamer like that, yes you would see it in the chamber. He is either full of it or did not use your reamer.

If it had issues "before" he used it, you should have been notified "before hand".
Bet you won't be loaning out any more of your reamers.
And if PT&G did the work, my guess it when it left their shop, it didn't have any problems.

Yeah I thought that was kind of funny that the guy said he received it that way. That means he noticed it was damaged....and then still used it to chamber a barrel??? Give me a break. He never thought that lie through very well.

Classic example why my father taught me not to lend tools. He always said, " loan your chainsaw or your girl friend to your best friend" and he will throw a rod in both of them.

I don't borrow or loan out reamers, period. PT&G, and JGS will regrind reamers for about a 1/3 of the cost of a new reamer. Properly care for and used correctly reamers will last most folks a life time. I have several reamers with over 2,500 chambers cut with no sharpening or regrinding. A high pressure flush system is well worth the money, ie great chamber finishes long tool life.

I'm with Nat on this one. I generally will bend over backwards to help out a fellow shooter and literally give away or loan things, including ammo, that they are in dire need of. But reamers (plus my wife and my dogs) are off limits except in a case where we either use the same Gunsmith or have a prior relationship with and know the parties involved.

P.S. The aforementioned guys have their own wives and dogs and NO, I'm not into swapping either.

Those are some funny yet great advice replies. I give a lot of things away to help people out just this one time it bit me in the rear. The way I look at it is it cost me a little bit of money to find someone to absolutely avoid in the future.

Yeah but it's cheaper when you leave that to question ;)

I could count on one finger who I trust with my tools or equipment...and that finger is pointed at me :)

He Should Have Told You The Truth , AnD Asked YoU Where He Needed To Send It For Repair ! I Have A Few Freinds With Reamers, And We Swap Out All The Time. Never Been A Problem Because We All Assume REASPONSIBILITY for The Reamers, And Make Sure They Are In Top Shape When Returned!!!!
