reamer question

I am considering purchasing a reamer to retain for my own use. I am not a gunsmith. I would own the reamer in order to have consistant chamber dimensions each time I rebarrel.

For what it is worth the cartridge is 6mm Ackley Improved.

If I choose to get a reamer, would removable pilots be a significant advantage over solid pilot reamer in this senario? Thank you.

Yes.

Definatelly I would buy a finisher with removable pilot (standard option at PT&G I think). You probably do not know which barrel blank you or your gunsmith will use (.236" or .237" or something between). So there is a need for removable pilot. A serious gunsmith should have a nice collection of pilots in different sizes.

You may want to give Dave Kiff a call on the reamer I am pretty sure that MOST AI reamers are on the big side as they were intended to "Punch Out" a factory chamber.

Good Luck

Very interesting Hippy. Not an argument from me at all, just wanting to give another side to the pending discussion and see what shakes out.

I had the impression some 10 years back when I first mentally entered the wildcat portion of chamberings that you could do just that, stick an AI reamer in and your were gtg.

Along the way I was informed that the shoulder in an AI was a bit forward and would not clean up a SAAMI chamber so a thread or two had to be trimmed from the tenon for things to clean up.

Now I'm sure we both agree that there are probably as many "AI" reamers and specs out there (as there are SB chevy tinkerers) calling everything with a blown out shoulder AI. Aren't they all officially 40°? Or am I mistaken on this?

This should be interesting.

Just curious as to what others will say on this.

I think P.O. Ackley standardized his version, the 40° one. RCBS also came out with theirs, it was 35° if I remember correctly. There were too many guys who did not abide by P.O.'s standard to shorten up the chamber that made all the wildcats.
