Reamer pilot bushing question

Do pilot bushings from different types reamer manufacturers interchange? I am going to rent a reamer from 4D reamer rentals because the 300 ultra mag reamers my gunsmith has are solid pilot and too large. My problem is I have a tight bore 30 cal barrel. (.2977 at the smallest). 4D doesn't have a pilot bushing that will work with that small of a bore. I will have to order a pilot bushing which is no big deal. I tried to call and see whose manufacturer he uses but it's hard to get them on the phone. The last one I used was a PT&G 20BR reamer. Does anyone know if he uses just PT&G? Thank you for any help

I know PTG and JGS use the same length bushings. Clymer is longer IIRC. Not sure if Manson's will interchange as I have never owned a piloted Manson reamer.

It's a custom bushing. The gunsmith doesn't have one that small. My barrel runs .3065 - .2977. The average barrel is closer to .3080-.2999ish

I've made some one offs when in a pinch from Bronze rod...... A bit time consuming but shorter than waiting for the mailman!

Well ask yourself this. Is the the last 30 cal barrel I am going to need the rest of my shooting career?

If not order a custom reamer. I use the what I call the 222 theory. Take the ammo you are going to use, measure the base .200" up from rim and add .002 to that. Measure the neck and add .002 to that. Get a standard bushing and extra bushing when you order.

That way all your brass transfers over to the new barrel when that one goes south.

All my custom reamers were made by Dave Manson when he was at Clymer and since he went on his own I continued to get him to make mine.
You did not mention what caliber you are going with? If 308 are you going to use commercial brass or LC Match?

Hummmm, a .300UM on a barrel that 'tight'?

Use a looonnngg forcing cone , notice I didn't say leade or throat . Freebore , that's it , bore rider bullets ?

Well if he is a competent smith and properly indicates the bore and prebores the chamber first, he can use a solid pilot reamer without problems. This is assuming his solid pilot is smaller than .2977. I think I would ask my barrel maker to replace the blank.
