Reamer neck clearance question?

Phil

Gold $$ Contributor
I`m going to be having 3 reamers made soon and I just wanted to double check neck clearance.

All 3 are hunting guns, two are .20 cal. and the third is a 223 AI. all are using Lapua brass.

Is .003 a good amount of neck clearance or should I go to .004???

The .20-223AI shows .232 with a 39gr Blitzking in it, so I`m thinking .235-.236.

The .20 Fireblaster shows .236 with a 32 gr v-max, so I`m thinking .239-.240.

And the .223 AI shows .251 with a 50 v.max, so I`m thinking .254-.255.

I`d rather not be turning necks on any of these, so what sayeth the experts, I only want to order these once.

Thanks,

Phil.

Using a good .0001 micrometer might show around .001 difference from the caliper method. Make sure to measure over where the base of the bullet is in the neck.

For a hunting rig, I'd opt a straight (non tapered) neck of .004 over your measurements. Since reamer makers work to a tolerance, you may want to specify your dimension as 'not less than' rather than rolling the dice on the tolerance. But either way, .004 is where I'm at on hunting gun from a magazine with the exception of a .255 on a 22BR (.252 loaded round) in a single shot action.

Bigger necks are always better than tighter on a hunting rig. ;)

My 2 cents worth... -Al

I have no problems w/ the Fireblaster using Lapua or older Rem cases… just trimming them to keep it in check…

You don’t know what your missing!!!

Al,

I measured at the bullet base

I like the “not less than “ I’m going to use that.
JGS is my reamer shop of choice and I agree that for a hunting rifle that more is better, I’d rather not be turning these.

Thanks for the reply,

Phil

Gabe,

I’m glad you’re enjoying the fire blaster, I can’t remember what neck dimension I have on my reamer, but I’m going to have to get a reamers to open up the neck on mine.

What did you end up for a neck dimension on your reamer???
