Reamer makers

No. Manson uses C rings which really slow down the flow form the flush system.
i have some manson reamers and so i know about the clips and i dont like them. so you are saying the bushings would fit but the lube flow would be an issue?

If you order a reamer from manson and specify it is for through barrel coolant, they run the flutes all the way out to the end and move the groove for the clip .050 away from the bushing. That lets the coolant past the bushing. I like JGS grooved bushings better. The commercial carbide reamers I have, all have grooved bushings.

On the other side of the Atlantic :

they can produce a custom reamer in 2 weeks. There might be more delays in waiting for their export paperwork though.

BBT make good reamers.ARC ballistics make good reamers also and both are excellent to deal with.

When you obtain your reamers with flutes all the way to the end, do this:

Remove screw and bushing, replace screw tighten the screw snugly.

With a small triangle file, notch the screw aligned with the flutes and as deep as the flutes.

Replace bushing.

This will greatly increase the coolant flow.

Manson holds diameters to +0.001. JGS holds to the SAAMI spec of +0.0005. Sometimes it makes a difference.
I ground a notch in the end of a screw driver to push the c-clips off. Makes it very easy to change bushings.

Years ago when I used Clymer reamers I had so many C clips fly off and disappear into the shop that I bought a 100 pack of clips!

Something of a trashy way to deal with Manson reamers.

Wrap the groove with dental floss until you get it built up
enough to to be snug on the bushing ID.

Just slide the bushings on and retract the reamer-----and following
bushings until the bushing stays in the barrel. Push this bushing out
with a brass or copper rod or tube.

Select the bushing ID size and put on the clip-----now ready to go
to work.

Just something to mull over while looking for a better way.

SAAMI diameter tolerance is .002 for production. It is .0005 for velocity and pressure test chambers.

Can some one explain what is a live pilot and how that works, I’d rather not assume. Thx

@SPJ A live pilot is just a bushing that goes over the front end of the reamer and rides in the lands to keep the reamer from chattering and centered. The pilots come in different sizes to fit a particular barrel.

"Chatter is not usually a problem on BBT reamers as the flutes are not exactly 60 degrees apart, but are staggered at un-equal angular separation which prevents reamer chatter."

interesting.
