Reamer holder vs pusher

Some seem to think that a floating reamer pusher and a pre-bored chamber are
"better" than a floating holder.

Can anybody shed some light on their comparison ?

Try it both ways and decide on the way that makes you the happiest with the outcome. That’s what it will boil down too.

I have done a bunch of different testing on this.

If you are after zero runout from the lands of the rifle to the back/breach end of the chamber. In my experience the only way to accomplish this is to drill, prebore with a boring bar to match the case taper then come in and ream the chamber.

I have yet to be able to accomplish this using a piloted/bushing reamer and any sort of floating reamer holder.

Adding to this, non floating reamer holders/rigid reaming if done correctly and great lengths are taken to ensure the reamer are square and consentric to the bore. Have given me zero runout on a 10th indicator when used after drilling and preboring.

When using floating reamer holders even after drilling and preboring. I have still gotten a few tenths of runout in the breech end of on some of the chambers.

Now the big question. I go though all the trouble to get next to zero run out. Does it make a difference on the target? I’m not sure? But it helps me sleep
at night.

Interesting comments. I drill and bore as many do. The torque on the pusher gave me chambers with a larger than desired base. I switched to the Manson floating reamer holder. I see no reason to go back.

As suggested, try it, use what you like!

Just rolled through your videos... I left a comment on the floating holder.... I have the same suspicions and issues.

OK I'll put this out here , This not for production chambering but for the occasional use , especially if your cheap like I am. I've cut some pretty nice looking chambers with it. After the barrel is centered up I square up the tool holder to the barrel end and JB weld a tooling ball in a washer to the tool holder and push it into the bore , after a couple hours the reamer goes in the bore and the tooling ball goes in the hole in the back of the reamer. chamber as usual. I've only chambered about 20 barrels and about a dozen like this but the borescope doesn't lie they look good.

Looks vs run out are 2 completely different battles.
With scotch bright or emery and enough time I could make any chamber look flawless.
But like I said above. I wish I knew how much a little run out in the back end mattered.
Thousands of rifles are done with a pusher like yours. What are you getting for run out when your done? If they shoot they shoot… not saying you’re doing anything wrong or trying to start an argument. Just wondering. Thanks for sharing.

I did something similar with a tooling ball in a dead center workes great

With scotch bright or emery and enough time I could make any chamber look flawless.
But like I said above. I wish I knew how much a little run out in the back end mattered.
Thousands of rifles are done with a pusher like yours. What are you getting for run out when your done? If they shoot they shoot… not saying you’re doing anything wrong or trying to start an argument. Just wondering. Thanks for sharing.

Next Time I chamber a barrel I'll measure it for runout . I did a wiggle test on my .223when I did it there was no play detected. I didn't polish any of them.

Next time you do your “wiggle test” put a indicator on the shank of your reamer and see what kind of run out your reading on the shank of your reamer when you rotate the barrel/chuck.
Then see what kind of run out you getting on the chamber to see if it corresponds.
Whatever movement I see when I’m cutting a chamber with an indicator set up on the shank of the reamer shows up when I measure chamber runout.
But I have never did a pusher by hand to check. I’d be interested to see what you find.

I'll do that. I don't have anything to chamber at the moment but I have two actions in the works so eventually I'll have two more barrels to chamber. I'll let you know.
