OK, what is the next chapter of the book are you going to give us next?

Butch, I don't know you, you don't know me and you definately don't know 22XC guy. But I will say that 22XC is my shooting partner for the last 20 years and when he chimes in with a little knowledge I would really appreciate it if you did not disrespect the man. He is very well versed in metallurgy, works for the refineries in Philadelphia, Pa. doing magnetic crack checking on refinery containers. Kinda got my goat when I thought we are all here to share knowledge and have a good time shooting and sharing and then I get wind of this.

Basically I am just backing him up a wee bit as he works most of the time and is more or less a newby on 6BR. Trust me when I tell you this that he is very smart on this stuff and was just trying to share knowledge with fellow members and I really appreciated his 2 posts as I am sure a few other members did.

We are all here to make smaller groups and tune our rifles in better, and I feel that your posts were not in the true spirit of 6MM BR towards fellow members. So no hard feelings, Merry Christmas, and keep those groups small.!!

40X Guy,
The op was looking for help on a chatter problem and not a dissertation on steel and how the various ones machine. All of that is in my Machinest Handbook. I am sure he is a nice guy and knowledgeable in his area. I didn't see where he contributed to this thread.
I'm proud of you for sticking up for your Bud.
Butch

I'm confused? I don't see any cracks as a collet would have. How is this done exactly with solid stock?

Going back to the original thread, modifying the floater reamer holder, could have relieved a unnoticeable tool change, it's highly unlikely, but material characteristics is known to change under certain factors. Here's a few other factors to consider; on the microscopic level with "mountains not catching the valleys between the two dissimilar metals, friction coefficients, or maybe a run-out from a unknown hard spot.

The standard method taught at Lassen College was to wrap the reamer with a sheet of paper and change the RPM of your lathe. Either faster or slower than the speed that you encountered the chatter problem. I saw more problems with reamer chatter with Shilen barrels than other makes. Not to say Shilens are bad, I chambered about 15 Shilens when attending the school and never encountered reamer chatter myself.

Cool!

I love it when money comes my way!

Yes, this little lathe is proving itself to be a very good tool for barrel work. I spent a few hours last week on the phone with a FANUC applications engineer. He helped me with some macro programming and creating a special M code specific to a problem I wanted to solve.

Now I can truly sit back and let the machine do the work. Much, much nicer now because the tool engagement into the barrel is consistent and linear.

Cool stuff and whats even better is IT WORKS GREAT!

Enjoy your Sunday Germs!

I have only had a problem once with a reamer wanting to chatter and I was cutting at 70rpm, I went up to 200rpm and it solved the problem. I have since changed to cutting at 200rpm on all of my barrels and have seen much better results.
