Ream neck to SAMMI

IMHO, if you "ream", the brass is gone and you can't put it back.:(
I would use an expander mandrel to get to the size you want.;)

A chucking reamer is an inexpensive tool designed to enlarge holes to a uniform diameter while staying on center. A neck is just clearence. Ask yourself how accurate you need your clearance tolerances?
I would not do this by hand. In a machine with proper set up it will work better than can be measured.

What tool/reamer do I need to enlarge the neck from a match neck to SAMMI specs?
Thanks,
Robert

If all your talking about is literally enlarging the neck portion of the barrel chamber, then there's a very easy solution. Assuming you have a lathe in good shape.

You can buy HSS or carbide chucking reamers for a fraction of what an industry specific tool vender sells them for. It won't have a pilot, but you really don't need it. If all your talking about is a couple .001's then it will "truck and trailer" the existing hole all day.

These are available in .0001" increments from some vendors so you can split hairs to your hearts desire.

Save money, you can have it at your door tomorrow, and it'll work just as well as any tool sold by industry folk.

I use chucking reamers as Chad suggested. Calculate neck length. Touch off reamer. Feed to the neck length and then check with a bore scope to CYA. I do it when the barrel is set up when chambering. I hold the reamer by hand with a small tap handle and guided on the out board side. I can usually feel it reach the end of the neck.

Update.Chamber Reamer cut a neck to .312 and would not chamber loaded Lapua brass with out turning the neck down .002. Loaded ammo is .314, bought chucking reamer at .318 for a .002 clearance around neck. Removed barrel from action, (It's a Howa action) dialed it in again in the lathe and recut the throat using a loaded cartridge as a depth gauge. All went well and I expect it will shoot as good as or maybe even better than before. Was shooting .6" five shot groups before. reamer cut that throat so.............. easy.
Thanks to all for your help, especially you Chad,
Robert
