Really Right Stuff tripod for varmint hunting

Hello Everyone,

Does anyone out there have any first hand experience with RRS tripods? If so, which model would be best to carry on a walking prairie dog hunt? I believe I would use it most while sitting on a camping stool, but standing would be nice as well. I am 5'10" inches tall. All of the options that RRS stuff offers makes it so confusing.

There's no question RRS products are top notch, but there are cheaper alternatives that will do the same job for less money.

I purchased a Slik 700 DX and have used a pig saddle on it as well as a home built rest. I also put a Leofoto LB-60N leveling base on it. This setup works great. Most of my PD hunting is from one spot, but I do move around some, but not very far. I also made a simple shelf that is easily added or removed from the tripod. It will hold a box of ammo, drink, note pad, etc.

Slik 700 DX - The Slik comes with a detachable center column. I order the piece that goes into the main column which supports the camera, leveling base etc., epoxied it in place and that gives me 2 main columns I can use. The pig saddle is attached to one and the leveling base and my other rest is attached to the other. Makes changing out a rest easy peasy.

Leofoto LB-60N Leveling Base - I read some reviews on this leveling head and a lot of the reviews said it was gritting feeling when using it. When I got it, I tried it out in the reloading room and sure enough it had a gritty feel to it. Very easy to take apart. Cleaned and lube it really well and now it's perfect.

I shoot standing mostly until I get tired or the PD shooting gets light action. When I'm shooting sitting, I use a drummers stool with a sheepskin cover on it. The sheepskin cover stops ass sweat. I also have a folding type of chair, but the stool is easier to shoot from.

Either the 33 or 34L with the anvil 30 head would be a good choice. I have the 33 and it’s awesome.
