Real world velocity with 162s in a 7MM-08??

My soninlaw is looking at maybe building a 7MM-08 for tactical shooting and using the 162amax or 168 Bergers. We were wondering what some of you guys are getting for velocity out of a 26 or 24" barrel. Any help would be appreciated. Only want to use those two bullets and those barrel lengths. Thanks guys!!!

Never tried those projectiles but if 2950 is easily do-able with 140s, I'd have to imagine 2800 is ballpark for 160-class.

In my custom Remington 7mm08 build with 24" 1-9 twist trueflite ultramatch barrel I get a safe 2,700fps with the 162gr Amax & 2,650fps with the 168gr Berger. If you are conforming to magazine length OAL Reloader 17 gets the nod to reach these speeds or if you run a long throat H4350 is my choice. Your'l need to go 7mm08AI or the 284Win if you want more velocity than the above from a short barrel.

Mine runs it routinely and I have two buddies who do just the same.

in my 24 in bbl 7mm-08 I'm using 140 bergers with RL17 powder . the last time I shot it through my chrony (8-12-11) it gets 3077 , 3077 , 3080 , 3077, 3081 .

I was using the 168 bergers with RL17 powder I was able to get (5/22/11) 2841 , 2848, 2854, 2830, 2842

I was playing with 168 bergers but my accuracy was not great at the higher velocities . . my accuracy got better after I slowed it down , into the 2470's . that's when I switched to the 140's . Jim

2700-2775fps seems to be a fairly common accuracy node for the 162 A-Max/HPBT from a 7mm08.

While not every sporter barrel will get the 140grainer hitting 2,950fps a case fill of Varget should definately be knocking on the door. ChrisNZ is quite right - I know of quite a few running those speeds from 24" sporter length barrels. I've run the 140's at over 3,000fps with RL17 but have settled on H4350 for 2,942fps from a 24" barrel.
