Real world agg. capabilities of 6BR.

I have recently sold a 6PPC as I did not attend many matches, matches far away, being available for the matches) but just last weekend shot a match at club level.

I do really like it, but will never be 110% committed to the short range benchrest.

Now, I am thinking of having a LV,10.5lb) 6mmBR built, shooting the 68 grainers. I have all the 6mmBR gear already as I shoot a Dasher. It seems a no brainer from where I am.

What is the agg'ing, nice word huh) capabilities of the 6mmBR. IS it really that close to the PPC? What will I lose out on by not going to a PPC?

I really do think I know the answer to these questions, but asking for peoples opinions is a great reassurance.

For me, shooting the occasional club shoot 100/200/300 and maybe one state level comp a year, I dont think I will see the difference.

Can the 6mmBR agg at 100/200.

Opinions welcome, and wanted!

Cheers

I have shot 600 & 1000 yd Benchrest for many years now. But, I have not shot 100 & 200 group matches, but I have shot score matches 100, 200, and 300 with 6BR & 30BR. I think the 6BR will run with the 6PPC. I have shot a 6BR for 10 to 12 years, with all twist, and shot some very good Aggs. If some of the top Benchrest shooter were shooting 6BR, they could tell you the difference. The PPC is the King at 100 & 200, with 95% of the shooters are shooting them.

The Big 30Cal's were are King at 1000yds, but you see 6.5mm & 6mm taking alot of match.

6Br and 6BR IMP are king in 600yd Benchrest.

I would build the 6BR and also look at putting a 30BR barrel on it too.

Mate its what I think. I will not be dedicated to short range B/R enough to even be classed as one of these top 100/200 shooters to be able to tell the difference.

The 6mmBR shooting 68's will be more accurate and capable than myself at these ranges.

I really would like to hea from guys shooting a 6mmBR in short range.

Cheers

I believe if Lapua 6 BR brass had been available back in 'the old days' the 6 MM PPC would only be a footnote in shooting history today in 100 and 200 yd. group shooting. I have two versions of the 6 BR, full length and .100 short. They will shoot with my 6PPC any day of the week. IMHO

I am not a shooter who watches the velocity closely on my short range group rifles. That said, my best loads that i shoot the most are 66-68gr. custom bullets over AA 2015 or H322 old military surplus when available in a 1/14 twist. Powder volume usually comes up somewhere in the shoulder depending on tune or faze of the moon.
Looking at some old records I see velocity of up to 3300 plus on some of the stiffer loads, but I tended toward the milder stuff down around 3100 to 3200.

The 6mm BR is a little big, capacity) for point blank Benchrest so it will never be equal to a PPC at those yardages. The short BRs, on the other hand, can compete with the PPC. The 6mmBR is at its best at the mid ranges with a fast twist barrel and high BC bullets. By building a 6mmBR with a slow twist, shooting low BC lightweight bullets, you'll have a rifle that will be limited to the short distances and yet not be the best for that use. Since you don't intend to seriously compete at the short distances, why not build a rifle with a faster twist? You can still use it at point-blank and maybe even win a fake-wood trophy here and there.

Look in the Daily Bulletin about 5 pages back May 6th and you will see 'expiper''forum name' shoots a 6 BR 8 twist and shoot it in 100/200/300/600 and says he doesn't believe he gives up anything. At 100/200 he shoots 66/80 gr bullets. It is a 13.4 lb. Hv RIFLE. He post on here but may be at a shoot. Interesting read.
