Real time velocities 284 vs 284 Shehane

1shot

Gold $$ Contributor
I'm currently running a 6.5mm wildcat with 140 gr. bullets in the 3,050-3,070 range. After reading more posts than I can count, I still don’t have a handle on what either of these cartridges will do out of a 30” bbl. So, will some of you that are shooting the straight 284 Win. or the 284 Shehane version please give me some real time no BS data on what velocities you are getting with 180 gr. bullets. I've seen way to many claims of outrageous velocities, that either the brass has to be trashed after 1 or 2 loadings or that the load isn't accurate and the shooter is just a velocity freak, more than likely both. ;D If I decide to make a caliber change, I would need to see a decided advantage over what I’m currently shooting to justify the tool up costs. Thank you all for your input and advice,
Lloyd

284 shehane, bartlin barrel gain twist 9-8.5

180 berger vld

cci br2 primers

H4831 /58grns

2972 fps on average lapua cases 10 fireings per case.

thats my load rl17 will be faster 52-54 grns but the barrel will suffer /

IMO, the BEST source for the answer to your question would come from Bill Shehane himself. He is always ready to help out in any way possible ;)

im shooting my straight 284 at 2900 fps with 56 gr of 4831sc. single digit es for 10 shots. the accuracy is very good also. Ive got 6 reloads on brass and still holding primers in. 32" brux barrel 1:9 twist. thats been my standard load for my last 3 barrels. work up to it cause it might be hot in your gun.

Don't have a shehane since my straight .284 treats me so nice. 1500 rounds of 162 A-max w/4831sc/tula @ 2980' anneal after every 3rd. Lapua cases @ approx 9 firings now, same routine with 180 hybrids w/4831sc/tula ave. 2890'. Both moderate f-open loads work well in hot MN wx. RL-17 with the 162's is 30-40' faster but increased the veritcal and ES. H4831sc seems to be the favorite for 180's. Almost forgot; Barnard on 30.5" Bartlein & Brux. Eric in DL

.284 Shehane
32" Bartlein 9 twist barrel
58gns H4831SC
180 Hunting Berger VLD
2950fps
I got up to 14 firings on one batch of cases the primer pockets gave up by this point.
My other cases are on 6 firings and are still going strong.
I tried Reloader 17 in this barrel and did get 3050fps with a 180 Berger.
The loads with H4831sc were just so much more consistent.
Cheers
Dave

He's a salesman, and you can only get dies through him.......

Three guesses what he'll say, and the first two don't count........

Straight 284

55.5gr H4831sc 175gr SMK 28" CBI barrel w/.220 freebore was 2883
55.5gr H4831sc 175gr SMK 26" CBI barrel w/.220 freebore was 2812

I used to shoot the Hybrids, but my wallet couldn't keep up. I was shooting them with H4831sc also, right at 2800 out of the 26" CBI barrel.

2213SC 55.5Gr
168VLD Berger
2930fps
rechambered 3 times
4500 count fired on 180pc Lap brass still servicable some primers a bit loose but still hold with out gas leakage

All load base on accuracy barrel nodes some maybe to hot for some barrels all max loads should be approached with the usual cautions

Never chase velocity its all about accuracy.
RB :)
BTW this is all real world load info no BS

To all that replied, and in particular, “Raven”. Thank you all for your in depth information. Several of you hit the nail squarely on the head. It isn't about velocity it's about accuracy. Adding to that, it's also about the wind bucking capabilities of your cartridge. At 1K, you can have less than .5 MOA vertical but your combination shows a 6 MOA drift in a 10 MPH wind, you still have problems. (Missed wind calls, etc.) I should rephrase that, I would have problems, as I know one thing about reading wind.....I’m really poor at it ;)
Thanks everyone,
Lloyd

My barrel will not take the powder that you folks are using. 54.1grs. H4831SC, CCI BR2 primers & 180 JLK's that have been Boron Nitrided = 2,778 fps. out of a 28.5" Broughton.

180 Berger hyb .020 out.

In my gun it was 0.030 out. The throat in my .284 has moved since I've put rounds through the barrel, but I haven't chased the lands, and it still shoots great.
