Reading velocity at distance

Is it possible to position the Garmin at 500 m (close to the target) to read the bullet speed at that distance or is the chronograph triggered by the shot and is not activated at that distance?

Has anyone tried or is it not possible?

You'll not want to be too closes to the target as a radar system like Garmin's needs a little distance to do the velocity calculation between the Doppler readings it takes.

. . . maybe 15-25 yds???

Guess you'll just have to try it and see.

I shoot steel plates that hang on T-posts. I had a tab welded on the back side of the post with a hole bored in it to mount the garmin. Plan is to hang a 4 in plate infront of it for protection and then shoot above it. ( 1000yd). I want to do this to determine my true BC for the bullet I am using. I havent done it yet because where I normally shoot there isnt a spot where I can mount the target and have a clean and safe 20-30 yds past it for bullet to fly so the Garmin can do its magic. I will be in Az this winter and will easily find a spot to be able to do the experiment. I believe the Garmin is triggered by something moving thru its radar field and not by sound.

I have never tried the Garmin for this but I may. FWIW, I use my Shotmarker to get my downrange velocities (at around 1400 yards), which I then use to true my BC values for my ELR rifles. I would bet the Garmin is more accurate though.

Does anyone know how close the bullet has to get to the unit to get reliable reading?
