Read 4350 was the powder for 260 Rem. I got IMR rather than Hodgons. Big mistake

Read an article someone here linked last week. Basically it showed what all the top long range precision guys were using. The powder of choice was 4350. I had used IMR-4350 in past with sub MOA 300 Wby load. Plan on buying a 260 soon for some fairly local competitions and largely justified buying more 4350 for that reason as I have 6 lbs already for the 300 Wby. At the gun show this morning I found and bought an 8 lb jug of IMR-4350. Afterwards, my buddy tells me I bought the wrong powder and I should have bought H4350 for the soon to be 260 Rem target rifle. I had sent him a link to the previously mentioned article. Did I buy the wrong powder? Either way, I'm not telling the wife. Ha ha.

IMR-4350 will work for the 260 rem and most other similar ballistic cartridges like the 6.5 creedmoor, and 6.5x47 Lapua.

That said, almost everyone I know uses H4350. Some even use H4831SC with long drop tubes.

IMR-4350 will probably be a little more temp sensitive so if you can help it, watch out if you start loading near max charges in your gun with IMR 4350. IMR4350 also tends to give a little more velocity than H4350.

good luck.

Thanks. Guess I need to learn how to read. Here is a link to the article I kinda read.

I loaded up some IMR 4350 and some H4350 a while back. Not much difference. I can't remember which one was slower or faster but it was maybe 10 fps out of an old lot IMR VS new Lot H. I have seen more variation than that from lot to lot. The cut on the H is a little shorter and easier to meter, and of course there is the temp thing, maybe. I would just run it and be happy. With luck, by the time you run out, H4350 might be a little easier to find.

My Ford will out run your Chevy. No my Chevy will out run your Ford. Same with IMR and H or even AA 4350. Might be a little difference in the load but they all will shoot great.

Looking at the link that Dan supplied I notice that there is a big difference in bullets that are used in tactical competition vs. prone competition, mainly the lack of Sierras. I know Berger is a great bullet but is it a sponsorship thing, mag length thing or accuracy? Opinions?

I believe the lack of Sierra bullets, can be related to the lack of availability, during the last couple years. I like the Sierra 142's in my 260, but have a hard time finding them. I can get Berger 140 hybrids easier.

Thanks guys. Looks like I got a good stash of 300 Wby powder ;D

Will need to load the butt with split shot and slap a limbsaver pad on it if I am going to shoot it this much. Heck, I need to buy another stock for this Wby Vanguard, it's got a cheapy. The rifle is very lightweight and far more punishing than my 50 bmg. A buddy worked up a 5/8" capable load with it years ago. It was 4350 and 168 amax. Had a very hard time finding that bullet this past year since getting into reloading.

But a few nights back got lucky on Cabelas and found 250 packs on sale for $59/each with free shipping. I bought 1,000 and at the time thought I overdid it. Now that I got 14 lbs of 4350, perhaps not. Doing math on 80 grains per round, I got 1250 charges, to go with my total of 1150 bullets. Time to make some lemonade out of lemons.

Unfortunately the long range shooting events I am interested in allow 300 win mag at a max, but I will have fun shooting my 300 Wby recreationally on the same ranges. I need to improve my skillset anyway. By the time I shoot 1150 rounds, maybe I will be able to more easily justify purchasing the Savage LRP Model 12 with Bushnell 3.5-21 GAP I been lusting over. Anyway, I need to go find some split shot.

Thanks for your insights, as always.

By the time you shoot 1150 rounds in a 300 Weatherby the barrel is going to be gone and need replacing. Depending on your accuracy requirements and how hot the barrel gets when shooting, it may only take 800-900.

Either way, aside from a few lever actions, it's the only rifle I own between my AR15's and 50 BMG. Got to start somewhere I guess. I would love to put a heavy barrel on this Howa action anyway. It's a real shooter for around $500 as I recall, about 15 year old Walmart impulse buy. I don't even hunt. Ha ha.
