Need help with load for these bullets. What did I do?

Okay I’ll just say it now, I’m a novice trying to find my wayby reading, looking at videos and trying not to be a nervous wreck. I bought these at a gun show when I first started buying components long before I bought powder and primers thinking I could use them. I believed at that time they were sp (soft point) bullets and that I’d be able to find load data for them. I bought some IMR 3031 powder finally thinking it’s versatility would be good for me to begin with in .223, .30-30, and .35 Rem. So here I sit and I cannot for the life of me find any data on this SP bullet that I now believe to be the Hornady Interlock .30 cal. What am I missing I have the newest Lyman handbook, an older 2004 IMR small booklet, looking on line and I can find nothing. If I screwed up and bought the wrong thing, fine I can move on with a $35 mistake but I see guys talking about using the 150gr. Interlock all the time.
Any help would be appreciate, and while I have your attention, do these need crimped. I see in my book it says to follow the die manufacture’s instructions but I’ve read that some don’t need crimped. So how do I know?

These 150 gr. bullets can be handloaded using most any manufacturer published 150 gr. load data as you will want to start low and work up your load as most hand loaders do. Crimping is not a must with rifle loads. This is a pic of the Hornady Load data.

Since you mention 30-30, guessing lever gun. You probably will not find loads for pointed soft point or hp bullets. Round or flat nose bullets for safety reasons in tube magazine firearms.

I don't see any data for that particular powder either. U may have to go to a different powder for that bullet.

So if I'm reading this right, you want to use those bullets, and 3031, in a contender chambered in 30-30, correct? The page of data shown above is for 308 so it wouldn't be anywhere close to correct anyway.

The first place to start is a quality reloading manual. There's a lot of good reloading info in there, and I prefer the one's from the bullet makers but they're all ok.

The bullets you have indeed look like, and are labeled as Hornady 150 sp, which are Interlocks. They will work in your 30-30, no need to crimp for your pistol. If you were talking a lever gun 30-30, no they would not work for a couple of reasons.

Here ya go, 14" barrel load data with 3031. It's for a different bullet but will be close. No starting load listed but it's generally accepted to subtract 10% from max, in this case around 30 gr. You will have to find a seating depth for the bullets you have where they aren't jammed into the lands, there are several ways to do this but maybe make a dummy round and try chambering, then seat deeper until it chambers and extracts easily.

Okay to be perfectly clear, I have the Lyman book the IMR book a Hogdon book. This load is for a 22” G2 .30-30 Contender barrel. If it’s not printed somewhere I simply won’t load it because as a new reloader I need the confidence in printed data. Extrapolation leads to mistakes in people who lack confidence and I will not be a statistic. To much respect for what can go wrong. Maybe I just need to trade them or sell them and find some round nose bullets instead.

They look to be either the Hornady or even the reminton coke-lokt Sp's. Most load manuals show 3031 with the 150 grn for the 30-30 Win. As mentioned start with a start load and work up slowly.

Hogdon data for a 30-30 in a G-2 Contender lists a MAX of 33.0 grains of IMR 3031 with a 150 gr. Sierra. Start 10% lower (@30 grains) and work up.

Absolutely, I was just showing him that his bullet listing was available in the Hornady manual and not being caliber specific.

Hornady Reloading Center/Data site shows start load of 28.7 and max of 30.5 for a 150 grn bullet in the 30-30 Win for IMR 3031. Pull their site up and add it too your favorites and you have load data for numerous cartridges at your fingertips.

RAult....Post #12 & 14 show you different data. 1 from a powder maker and 1 from a bullet maker. You will notice that the Hornady (bullet maker) load is lighter (powder wise) than the (powder maker) Hogdon. These are differences that you will need to deal with in your load development. Differences between sources are common.
