Reaching the breaking point?

Not news, but it seems that component prices are making jumps greater than the "cost of doing buisness" theory dictates...powder that was $50.00 a lb a year ago, is now $71.00 a pound. Roughly 35% increase (RL15.5). bullets, cases, primers.....i am old, but getting it put to ya, never gets old. Will this pricing now be stable, or does it continue until it is a luxury hobby/sport? Just curious what everyone's thoughts on this matter are...rsbhunter

They're selling to those who can afford to pay. Pray for peace.

The market will set the price, and right now, demand is out-pacing supply. Guys that don't care about the price and hoard compulsively ... (like me) ... will definitely contribute to higher prices. That said, when hoarders ... (like me) ... feel like they have "enough", prices will start dropping a bit. Oh, and yes, I now feel like I have "enough" cases, primers, powder and projectiles to last me until my grandson (he's 2 now) is ready to use those supplies when he's in his teens. And remember ... it's not "hoarding" if you really really want lots of it.

I don't judge, anybody that has the means to stock up, should. The one point that is scary, is if reloading supplies will be needed, or even legal in 10-15 years....I have 2 grandsons, 4 and 7, that I pray know the fun and excitement of hunting and shooting..?....but if the powers that be have it their way???? rsbhunter

This is online....my local gs is selling RL16 for $99.99 A POUND. which is what they can do with sand!!!(pound)
I don’t use Alliant powders and after a little reading I see they are in the same boat as all the other powders were a year ago. There is allot more powders on the shelf now than just a few months ago. But I feel your pain I about burned out a barrel doing load development trying to find a substitute for h1000.

I am in the winter of my shooting career, but the future of the shooting sports looks dim from both a cost and legislative perspective.

I don't see costs retreating much given the escalating national debt's effect on inflation, but I am not economist.

So far, we have been able to blunt many of the insane gun law proposal but for how long?

I have minimized the cost impact by consolidating the centerfire calibers I shoot, almost exclusively 223 Rem since I get a about 280 reloads out of a can of powder. I still have my 243 Win's, but they don't see much action these days. I sold my 308's and 22 250's a few years ago as I began downsizing. But $70 a lbs. gives me stomach acid.

On the legislative front, the only thing we can do is vote for pro-gun candidates.

Recent yearly renewal, one of my clubs lost over ten percent of it's members. It'll be interesting to see how much practice the match shooters do beforehand.
Edit: Be thankful the U.S. doesn't have the inflation of other countries. Ten years ago I was in South Africa and their rand was worth a U.S. dime. Now it's worth a nickel and I don't know of anyone who's now making double to cover. Even uglier is that it used to be on par with the dollar, one rand equaled one dollar.

The last powder I bought was Staball HD at $44 and change. Felt that wasn’t too bad. Found Fiocchi small rifle primers 150 for $11. VV powder is actually a fair price- what’s on the shelf in the stores. Haven’t priced it online in a bit.

I’m shooting powders I’ve had for 15 years at this point. Mostly.

I did rattle a couple of metal powder cans the other day to see how much was in em.

Yeah, tried golf once. The Naitional Earth Worm Association sent me a cease and desist order. I also am going the small caliber route. As I shoot in matches, I'm using 6mm Dashers, but have just built a 22 brai, and have a 22 arc bbl on order for my ar. We shoot approx 1-1/2 moa plates out to 550 yards, that have to be knocked off of stands. So, power is a factor, but the cost/components gain will probably be worth it. I also believe that this country is heading down a dark hole. The saying "God, guns and guts" may get put to the test...rsbhunter ....edit 90% of the guys in my club are 60 and over...

I started reloading mid pandemic, when you could find absolutely nothing. I bought two pounds of powder off gun broker for like $70 a piece with shipping. I thought, "I can't believe I did that. It'll definitely come back down though." That was over 3 years ago, and the price I paid for those two powders in gun broker are now the normal prices.

I could and would understand if I could be sure it was inflation and not greed. Most powders are made overseas, I'd almost bet the bulk amount of profit is made once it hits the states....I'm in the down hill part of this toboggan ride, so the pain is more sadness and less wallet. Hope the N.Y. Times best selling book never starts out "Once upon a time, when we could own guns in America...."
