RE: Wolf Primers ie PMC/Russian primers

Anyone got a lead time on when Graf's will have these fabulous primers for sale? These are the same primers PMC marketed and a short time Russian primers.

They are great for ES/SD with slower powders like RL 22, VIN N560 and H4831sc.

Rhino,
I have not ever shot the Russian primers, You really seem sold on them. I will have to try some when they come in.

Once you do you'll see why, well if you shoot a slow powder like H4350 or slower. Cut my ES for 10 shots under 10fps. Winchester best was 16 fps, then federal GM.

They are also a little bigger and grap the primer pocket nice when others start to loosen.

I called Wolf this past week and they did not have a definite date for availability or names of vendors who would be carrying them. It was suggested that I check back in a month.

I called Grafs yesterday,9/28/2006) and was told that the Wolf primers are still two months away.

I'm using H4831SC in .243Win shooting DTACs and in 6.5-08AI shooting 139-grain Scenars. Right now I'm using 210M primers, but there must be something better since the unavailable Russian primers are touted to be the best.

In their absence, what are the optimum primers for H4831SC - a relatively slow powder?

rino:
I have been shooting them for about three years now I still have about 15K of the KVB-7 lot 1 and 10k of the lot#3
Now on with it, in brisence the Russian is about like the Winchester marked for STD or MAG use and some of the Winchester primers WILL produce as good as or even better SD's

If Graffs still has them on SALE and I did not have any I would buy any and all they had, JMHO though. I also hear about two months for the El Lobo to participate in the Russian matches, so we just wait.

I've been shooting the new ones from Graf in the plain red and white boxes against the old ones in the PMC boxes and can not tell any difference in them at all over the cronograph. 2 cases should last a while, I hope....

I need some help with these PMC primers, which I received from Grafs a couple days ago. I loaded some 243Win with H4831SC and DTACs using the PMC primers that I installed with a Lee primer tool. At the range I quickly learned that there was combustion products seeping from around the PMC primer.

I thought I read somewhere on this Forum that the PMC primers had to be well seated. I thought I did that originally, but possibly not.

After returning from the range today, I bought out my trusty Sinclair primer tool and firmly pressed PMC primer in each unfired round. Although the primers were seated at the bottom of the pocket with the Lee tool, the Sinclair tool "flattened" the metal top of the primers, which were originally rounded along the circumference from the side to the top.

I hope this is what was meant by seating them firmly. I'll try the local range in the next few days.

Does anyone want to comment on this problem and whether I have now firmly and correctly seated the primers?

OneEyedJack:
The process to seat the Russian primer is as followes.
Use the Lee tool and seat them in qualified pockets, after you hit the bottom,as felt) PUT some sensitivity on the Anvil by a bit more pressure, this will preclude the click when ya drop the Pin ie. missfires, this extra bit of push is mandatory as it sensitises the primer. And now the reason, the Russian primer is BIGGER than anything that you have used before and requires more attention to seating.
Got It???
But remember whatever you do, DON'T squat with yer spurs on!

My wife made me stop wearing spurs, they were chafing her sides...

I've had no problem igniting the Russian primers, but about 40% have ignition product leakage around the edge of the disk. I've never seen this before with any CCI or Federal primers.

I haven't been to the range to check out the success of my revised seating process, tell me what's wrong with it):

* Insert a primer with a Lee tool, much faster than a Sinclair) and push it to the bottom

* Using a Sinclair tool, repress the primer - it will flatten on top and appear to be more deeply seated. It's definitely as far down as it will go. The Sinclair tool has more leverage and better feel than the Lee.

If this doesn't work, I will have 15K PMC primers for sale!

When Jackie Schmidt did our RailGun 6BR test he tried some Russian primers. He had a number that required two firing pin strikes to go off and he also experienced the leakage problem.

After the initial primer tests he determined not to use them again.

I know German Salazar likes them, but with CCI or Federal primers working so well, I'm not sure I want to be a guinea pig for the next batch of Russian primers.

Mod:
I think that jackie could have asked and received good information as to the Russian, I have shot them all and I can say without any reservation that the Russian cannot be beat if applied correctly and seated correctly. The Winchester is about equal hoeever will not produce the very low SD's that the Russian will my load in the 308 will produce 6 sd's and about 12 es's did I say that was with also the Russian powder, and I have never experienced a leaker.

Clarence

ps: ya gotta SEAT them correctly.

I went to the range today to shoot my 243Win/DTAC with the Russian,PMC) primers. I first pressed the primers using a Lee tool, for fast insertion), and then pressed again with a Sinclair tool to flatten them a bit.

While the number of "leaks" was much less percentage-wise, these Russian primers do not seem to take to my Lapua 243Win primer pockets very well.

Therefore, I now have 14,800 Russian primers,PMC "Large Rifle Magnum" primers, all Lot 2-04) that I received from Grafs last week. Price is $120 plus $20 hazmat and $10 shipping for all of them. If they work in your brass, this is a real bargain.

I've posted in the items for sale section, but you can e-mail me at: ronott@sbcglobal.net.
